SunRocket fax discovery

I have been playing with my new SunRocket line and did a few fax tests. I was able to successfully send to most machines from both fax/modem and HP Officejet fax. I failed 100% to my Callwave.com and K7.net fax numbers. I then forwarded my signature number to each, faxed to the sig number and achieved 100% success. I've only tested 3 calls each but it looks promising. I've used Callwave incoming for over 3 years without a single complaint.

Re: SunRocket fax discovery

Wow, that really works. Using your method I faxed something to
a real machine that I couldn't get past "training" with calling them direct.

This should give SR a clue as to how to implement faxing.

Do you have any idea why this works and direct faxing doesn't?
What made you think of this?:

Re: SunRocket fax discovery

I think when you use forwarding you don't use your broadband connection at home which is a curlpit for problems with faxing. Probably that's a reason why forwarding is prohibited to internation numbers since they route it differently.

I don't know why it works. It doesn't take much to move a given line from bad to good or the other way. Why does a DSL filter work for some? It must narrow the range in some way. My P8 line wouldn't fax on Comcast but works about 60% on Verizon FiOS. I noticed faxing seemed to consistently succeed or fail to each machine. I was consistently failing on a number I knew had worked well for years. I needed to change a variable. I only did a few tests. Let’s see how it works for others.

I had tried this in the past with no success; however, when I tried it today it worked perfectly. I would rather have it work normally without having to change the forward number, but I'll take it for now.

SunRocket upgraded my gizmo firmware from 4.50 to 4.54 today. I can now fax directly to the numbers I earlier could only send to by using forwarding. Anyone else?

Re: SunRocket fax discovery

No, I already have 4.54 but still couldn't fax until I tried your technique.

I did a few more fax send tests using the SR 4.54 firmware and both numbers now work directly.

I tried fax sending from my Packet8 line to the same numbers and failed directly and through my SR sig line forwarded to each fax number. Though only a single test, the SR forwarding trick only seems to work with SR lines.

Sorry, I'm a little unclear on this. Are you saying that you faxed from your Sunrocket primary line to your signature line which was forwarded to the machine you wanted to receive? If so, isn't the fax originating on the viop connection so wouldnt the problems be the same? Also, how do you convince them to upgrade firmware?

Yes. I can't explain why it works but it seem to work for many. Try it. If it makes a difference for you, perhaps you can figure why.

My firmware upgrade was done without my request or prior notice. I'm in my 4th week and my service had been unusable until late last week and it was obvious from my logs. SunRocket may have decided to try the upgrade to solve my issues.

So I got them to upgrade my firmware. I called tech support and just got lucky with a cool person. I was straightforward and said I wanted to upgrade for fax reasons. He said it doesn't guarantee support for fax. I told him I've read alot of forum posts that claimed success with sending with 4.54 so he said ok. About an hour later a support person called, asked if i could be w/o phone for 30 minutes, and told me to power cycle gizmo. I just tried faxing to a stanaphone number and it worked on 1st try.

Re: [Other] Sunrocket Echo

How do you connect the fax to the gizmo?

I'm able to send a fax but I can't receive.

I'm using a spitter at port 1 of the gizmo and both the fax and phone connect to the splitter. Fax does not work using any other connection.

I connect the gizmo to my household wiring which supplies 14 jacks. Several of the jacks have multiples. I never tried receiving a fax on this line. For incoming, I started using a fax server over 10 years ago and gave that up when I discovered these services, over 5 years ago. Never a busy, forward by email, print additional copies and access from anywhere.

Take a look at:

I'm not sure it's totally a firmware issue because I was able to fax perfectly from the beginning, about 3 months ago, with fw v4.45. It may have something to do with the quality of the broadband connection and/or the quality of the connection at the called fax location.

I've noticed a tendency with SR that the called party has an echo of itself. Only happens with some numbers, sometimes. So imagine if the fax machine you are calling is hearing an echo of itself!

In fact I noticed that when I once called a voice prompt system with voice recognition, the system kept being confused by an echo of itself. I almost never hear echoes--it's always the other party that does.

I called SR tech and asked about it, they had me do speed tests with visualware and blamed my "Pause Time" and suggested I call my ISP... I don't quite believe that's the explanation though...

Tek.

My TiVos can now connect over SunRocket at the default setting since the firmware upgrade.
