| Re: anyone tried VOIP in hotspots? I tried this in Miami and it was fair. The hotspot was, I believe, trough Sprint. I am not sure what the connectivity was however I can tell you the internet speed was pretty poor. In this situation I could hold a conversation however I don't think I would just sit and talk socially. I have heard of much better experiences from others however.

If you accessed it from a SoftPhone, please provide more details on how you accomplished that. Thanks.

| Before the "VoIP Craze" I used a Softphone at a busy Starbucks using the microphone and speakers of my IBM ThinkPad... it worked, and that's about it.
I see no reason to use a HotSpot for VoIP access -- I have a cell phone if I want to talk on the phone away from my home.

| I just got a notebook pc and am trying it with packet 8 using the adapter plugged in to LAN on notebook. I'm guessing that I have to share my wireless conection with my LAN connection to get it to work but my LAN shows as disconnected and wireless is working fine. Anyone have any tips for this?
The reason I'm using the adapter is some providers don't allow usage over softphone. | |

Note: ICS enables a DHCP server on your notebook, where the DHCP server uses the internal IP address of 192.168.0.1. It DHCP assigns IP addresses using the scheme 192.168.0.x (where x > 1). If your wireless connection is hooked up to a router using the same 192.168.0.x addressing scheme, you'll need to change your router to another addressing scheme (i.e. 192.168.1.x).
3) After step 2 has been successfully completed, your DTA should receive a DHCP assigned IP address from your notebook and be able to share your notebook's wireless network connection (i.e. you should have a dialtone at this point).

| Re: anyone tried VOIP in hotspots? hmm, I'm having problems getting that working. Cable modem is on 192.168.1.1, router was on 192.168.0.1 but that was giving me problems so I put it on 10.0.0.1. Then notebook wireless adpt I enable ICS and for notebook LAN I put in something like
10.0.0.5, 255.255.255.0, gateway 10.0.0.2 and for dns I also put in 10.0.0.2. (10.0.0.2 is IP for wireless adapter)
Lan still isn't working. I can't do bridge connection either. My wireless adapter is set to automatically get ip so maybe that is the problem. | |

The wireless adapter, based on your settings, will be DHCP assigned an IP Address of 10.0.0.x by your router. ICS on your notebook will in turn assign your notebook's LAN adapter an IP address of 192.168.0.x. ICS is doing NAT from the wireless adapter's 10.0.0.x IP Address to the notebook ethernet 192.168.0.x address(es).
I've never had any success in bridging wireless and ethernet network adapters, but I've been 100% successful in using ICS to connect my P8 DTA to my laptop's ethernet connection w/ the laptop's wireless connection ICS enabled.

EDIT: It is no problem whatsoever that your wireless adapter is configured for DHCP assignment. Each network connection on your laptop is using a different DHCP server:
Wireless Network Connection -> Uses ROUTER'S DHCP Server (10.0.0.x)
Ethernet (LAN) Connection -> Uses laptop's own ICS DHCP server (192.168.0.x) | |

EDIT: In case you were expecting the LAN Adapter to show an active connection w/o having anything plugged into it, you actually need to plug your DTA into the LAN port (using a crossover cable) for the connection to become active.
EDIT2: If you don't have a CROSSOVER cable, and if you have a spare hub or switch laying around, you can simulate what a CROSSOVER cable would do by:
a) Connecting the laptop's LAN port to the switch/hub using a standard ethernet cable
b) Connecting the P8 DTA to the switch/hub using a standard ethernet cable
(Neither connection above should go into the switch/hub's "uplink" port)
c) Don't plug any other ethernet cables into any other ports of the switch/hub! | |

| Re: anyone tried VOIP in hotspots? yes, my cable is crossover. It says straight TPE on it and is wired differently from my normal cables. I have it connected from notebook lan to plugged in packet 8 adapter.
To be more specific, on wireless notebook LAN I select properties, advanced and under internet connection sharing I select "Allow other network users...internet connection". I don't do this for notebook LAN adapter.
If I take crossover from packet 8 adapter and plug into router LAN pops alive. | |

| Re: anyone tried VOIP in hotspots? Most routers have auto-sensing ethernet ports, so whether you use a normal cable or a crossover cable, the router will accept it.
Do you have a second crossover cable you could try, or can you give the switch/hub simulation listed above a try? | |

That didn't work so I used a regular ethernet to uplink and it works now. Packet 8 is green now. Cool, I'm going to test it out on my neighbors hotspot and see how it works. Thanks. | |

| Re: anyone tried VOIP in hotspots? You're welcome. To confirm that the instructions I gave you (using a crossover cable) were correct, I just turned on my laptop and followed my own directions. They worked.  Sounds like there's something wrong w/ your crossover cable. Perhaps buy a new one and try it out.

| It was possible a while back to use Packet8 to make/recieve calls with Asterisk and probably softphones.
Then they added a few more security measures, it might still be possible, but all the easy hacks will no longer allow you to use the service with any off-the-shelf SIP device.
