[VA] Cox Nova To Dramatically Boost Internet Speeds

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 23, 2005

COX NORTHERN VIRGINIA TO DRAMATICALLY BOOST INTERNET SPEEDS
AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE TO CUSTOMERS

(Herndon, VA) – Cox Communications Northern Virginia today announced that, similar to the instantaneous speed increase it provided its high-speed Internet customers in 2004, Cox will again increase the speeds of its award-winning Cox High Speed Internet® service at no additional charge to its customers. Customers of both the Preferred and Premier Cox High Speed Internet packages will enjoy dramatically faster speeds starting in June 2005. Customers will not need to take any action as part of this transition, as the speed enhancement process will be seamless.

“Cox offers the complete bundle of digital telephone, digital cable and high speed Internet services that keeps Fairfax County residents ahead of the technological curve and provides our bundled, three-product customers with significant cost savings,” said Gary McCollum, vice president and region manager for Cox Northern Virginia. “While other telecommunications companies are promising to build the ‘network of the future,’ Cox is delivering on our commitment to bring advanced services to local residents today. With Cox, the future is now.”

Cox’s Preferred package, which is known as the company’s flagship product available across Fairfax County for under $40, will soon feature enhanced speeds of up to 5 Mbps per second download and 2 Mbps upload. The Preferred package is available to bundled customers (those who take video or telephone in addition to Internet) for $39.95 a month.

Cox’s Premier package customers will also receive a boost in speed. With the new speed enhancement, the service will offer customers speeds of up to 15 Mbps downstream and 2 Mbps upstream. The Premier package is available to bundled customers at a cost of $54.95 a month.

“We recognize that consumers in Northern Virginia have a choice in Internet providers, so it’s important for us to constantly look for ways to meet their needs,” said Clara Long, vice president of sales and marketing for Cox Northern Virginia. “Our customers have really embraced the bundle – digital telephone, video and high speed Internet service – thanks to the savings and convenience they are afforded.”

Cox also offers the Value package, which generally appeals to dial-up customers concerned more with price than speed or features. Value package customers pay just $24.95 a month, and enjoy speeds of up to 256 Kbps both upstream and downstream.

There you have it folks. Straight from the horse's mouth.

I called it, didn't I? I said that Cox would cherry pick, just like Verizon...and I was right on the money.

Re: [VA] Cox Nova To Dramatically Boost Internet S

I have a question. What about the rest of Cox's serviceable areas? Are the rest of us going to see any upgrades on the premier and preferred tiers in June 2005? The premier tier at 15Mbps down and 2Mbps up for $55 per month looks sweet than 5/768. Even 5Mbps down and 2Mbps up looks sweet at $40 per month and better than 4/512. But I bet living in a non Verizon area like SBC, we aren't going to see anything for a while. Cox probably will have to lower the prices for their high speed Internet services in rest of their areas, or do something to keep subscribers since it's not even right that NOVA is going to see speed upgrades, and the rest of us aren't going to see much of anything in June 2005. Just very curious.

Thanks,

Helen

I don't think Cox is Cherry Picking at all. They are just countering Verizon's FIOS. Is anything like FIOS soon to be released in the Oklahoma City area?

No. I am not complaining, just making a point. I am not going to whine because it does no good. I am happy for you folks in Va, I really am.

I don't think SBC has any FIOS plans in the near future. I know that they pretty much cornered the DSL market in the Tulsa area about a certain area. And the only real competition SBC has is Cox.

SBC's plans are limited to "Project Lightspeed," which is Fiber to the Node much like what Cox has. (except the glaring differences between HFC cable systems and ADSL2+ systems.)

SBC, however, IS planning on doing fiber to the home on NEW builds.

Not to nitpick, but when you call the over and the under, it is easy to get it right! :)

Your quote from page 3 of the initial post:
Don't get angry. Don't wet your pants yet. Let's wait to hear what the Cox reps have to say. I'd be amazed if Cox's system, as is, without any field upgrades, could support such speeds. I'm not seeing how they could.

In any event, it was a wise strategic business decision by Cox to count FIOS. Personally I was going to switch to VZ for FIOS and move my switched phone service to them, but instead stayed with Cox and added their switched phone service. After all those years of crappy service in NoVA, it finally pays off!

Having said that... VZ is still cheaper... I got a flyer from VZ advertising their FIOS rates as 5/2: $34.95* and 15/2: $44.95*
* with qualifying VZ calling package (not sure what "qualifies")

Indeed, I said that. I was referring to the ENTIRE COX SYSTEM AS A WHOLE. After that, I later came out with information that I had "gathered" from a source:
»Re: [VA] *** SPEED INCREASES IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE ***
said by MarkyD See Profile:

I have it from a VERY reliable source that these "rumors" are true. I am not going to give any further details, but I can confirm that in the NoVA area, Cox is indeed preparing to bump speeds. They are currently working on some final infrastructure upgrades, and the speeds should be going up fairly soon.

On another note, it is not expected that Cox will be doing this upgrade across the board, in all areas. It is expected that, for now, it will only happen in the areas where there is an imminent threat, i.e. FiOS.

Im saying this not that Im in the area that's getting the upgrade but IMHO they would be stupid not to.Do you know just how much more money they could make doing this to there whole network.Think about it if they can do it they would pull people right from under the telcos and yea Im in SBC country they(SBC) will be shiting there pants with something like this.

Smoke, good thought but I don't qualify for that van until we move to West Virginia. Then not only do we get the van but also a well used mobile home that will be the home sweet home. Additionally the mobile home comes with high speed dial-up.

Maybe SOHO Business users nationwide will be given the new 5/2 and 15/2 speed increases as well?

That would be a great marketing plan for the Cox Business unit.

Additionally, since CBI accounts are allowed servers, the 2Meg upstream makes a lot of sense.

Well I'm in Southern Viginia, and they are building the FIOS center about 3 miles from me, and all the fiber is being put in... In fact they just put it up to the pole in front of my house, so is Cox going to do it here as well? Probably not until well after FIOS is here, and I will be long gone by then. If Cox were to do this in all markets, it would push Verizon to change their policies, (Cherry Picking in this case) and we'd all end up happy (well most of us..).

verizon has built there infastructure so that there is 622/155 mbps per 32 users to support fios speeds. I'm not an expert on cox's infastructure, but from what I've gathered its not even close. Correct me if I'm wrong, but how is this going to work without crazy congested nodes causing high ping times and bizarre packet loss?

Like unless anyone can confirm cox has significantly upgraded there network if i were you cable guy id wish it wasnt coming because as soon as it hits there goes pings and packet loss without SERIOUS infastructure upgrades on cox's part. it'll be nice though until they finish the roll out to your node (maybe for the day before people get a new dhcp lease or reboot their modems)

I did a search on the cox.com website and I did find that it is true that Cox NOVA is getting the bump. I checked and it does not show anything for the New England market. I checked on the FIOS eligibilty page and I can get it. I am very tempted to grab the FIOS. I would rather stay with Cox.

I think they should do the bump across the board and not just in one market as it will upset a large amount of their customer base. And if Cox does not make an inititive to increase in the other markets, I would not be suprised to see some people drop Cox and go to DSL just to spite them.

The only thing I have seen in the New England market is a major increase in advertising their new 5mbit download service. If that is the way Cox is going to try compete with FIOS in Rhode Island then I have a feeling a lot of people will be jumping ship for FIOS.

I for one would like to see FIOS also offer TV service in Rhode Island as this will give Cox compitition. As Cox is the only choice for cable in Rhode Island with the exception of a few small areas.

yeah, but if the new speeds are docsis 2.0, i'm pretty certain docsis 1.0 or 1.1 won't take em. so they may not go offline, but they may not get the 15mbps either.

I just switched to Cox a couple of weeks ago at the current 4M/512K Tier after ditching my 1.5M DSL.

Needless to say I'm excited about getting yet another speed bump.. Compared to 1.5M, current speeds are awesome. I actually test out at about 4.6M/504K and have since day 1. So I'm curious if the new 5M service will really test out at something a bit higher. Can't wait to see.

Too be honest, I'll be pretty upset if they don't make the effort to roll these speeds out everywhere. This goes to prove they CAN give the speed, it's just an option if they actually want to or not.

If they leave everyone except VA at the current speeds, they're just taking advantage of the consumer as long as they can "until they realise you have other options" and take the effort to upgrade.

I'm not sure who's running Cox's public relations, but someone missed something.

Lou767

@cox.net

Re: [VA] Cox Nova To Dramatically Boost Internet Speeds

I'm sure if Cox increases speeds in VA. to compete against FIOS, then if you have FIOS in TX.(which you do), then COX
will increase speeds in TX. that are in a FIOS service area. Who knows maybe COX will upgrade they whole USA, but will take time and willing to bet those COX people that live in a FIOS service area COX will upgrade those areas first.

I'm tempted to start a picket line out in front of Cox's 10th street office here in OKC, just to be a jerk. I can hoist signs that say "Cox hates you, Oklahoma City!" My boss would probably give me off work to do it, too. He does not like the fact that we're paying $1k for 3/3mbps at all, so Cox is not his favorite company.
