I'm sure if Cox increases speeds in VA. to compete against FIOS, then if you have FIOS in TX.(which you do), then COX will increase speeds in TX. that are in a FIOS service area. Who knows maybe COX will upgrade they whole USA, but will take time and willing to bet those COX people that live in a FIOS service area COX will upgrade those areas first. |

said by Time :What about the rest of us through out the nation? Is it going to be only NOVA who is getting this or are they planning on making this a natiowide upgrade. I did a search on the cox.com website and I did find that it is true that Cox NOVA is getting the bump. I checked and it does not show anything for the New England market. I checked on the FIOS eligibilty page and I can get it. I am very tempted to grab the FIOS. I would rather stay with Cox.
I think they should do the bump across the board and not just in one market as it will upset a large amount of their customer base. And if Cox does not make an inititive to increase in the other markets, I would not be suprised to see some people drop Cox and go to DSL just to spite them.
The only thing I have seen in the New England market is a major increase in advertising their new 5mbit download service. If that is the way Cox is going to try compete with FIOS in Rhode Island then I have a feeling a lot of people will be jumping ship for FIOS.
I for one would like to see FIOS also offer TV service in Rhode Island as this will give Cox compitition. As Cox is the only choice for cable in Rhode Island with the exception of a few small areas.

| reply to nvaecare1 I'm tempted to start a picket line out in front of Cox's 10th street office here in OKC, just to be a jerk. I can hoist signs that say "Cox hates you, Oklahoma City!" My boss would probably give me off work to do it, too. He does not like the fact that we're paying $1k for 3/3mbps at all, so Cox is not his favorite company.

SBC, however, IS planning on doing fiber to the home on NEW builds. |

It seems as if even with the speed bump fios is a no brainer. Compare the oversubscription rates for cox vs. fios and it seems pretty obvious. |

| aaron12345 I believe you are misunderstand how most of cox's network is laid. cox like many cable providers has a hybrid fiber system which allows it to scale very easily. Virtually every house where I live has cable internet due to the inability of the phone company to deploy dsl (according to the installation tech), and I still average well above my rated speeds 4,000+ / 512. Its an issue I am sure cox knows well more about than you, and Ive been very pleased with the network performance in New Orleans. |

| reply to aaron12345 said by aaron12345 :It seems as if even with the speed bump fios is a no brainer. Compare the oversubscription rates for cox vs. fios and it seems pretty obvious. FIOS is certainly a no-brainer for me... There isn't a fiber to be found anywhere near my neighborhood. So Cox cable and DSL (Either Covad or Verizon) are the only options. I had Covad DSL (Covad leased a dry-pair from Verizon to provide the service). At 16,000 feet from my CO Covad had to work hard to give me 1.5/384 speed with reliability, but in the end it worked well for 5 years. But 1.5 was the speed limit. I also tried Verizon DSL - the best they could do on my other copper pair was 860/128. That was a non-starter. Who believes it - Verizon couldn't come close to the quality service I got from Covad... And Verizon owned the lines to begin with.
Anyway... FIOS may be different, but Verizon is still the phone company, and unless they change the color of their spots, I think Cox may have an edge for the time being.
Cox clearly can deliver Video and Data reliably and are breaking into the phone service business. I don't know how good that service is though.
Verizon can deliver phone service OK. But in my opinion, they aren't that great at residential DSL, and who knows what they can do delivering Video services. So Fios supporting Video, data, and phone... well thats real new territory for them. I gotta believe it will be a bumpy start. -- "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not one bit simpler."- Albert Einstein |

| Say what you will about Cox and their "planned" upgrades - I have the 4 megabit down / 512 kilobit up plan, and I'm quite disappointed. I've got no problems with the download speeds, I'm getting close to 4megabits...
The problem is upload speed: I am getting no more than 96 kilo _BITS_ per second ... this translates to about 12 KBytes per second - lame. Hardly any better than a dial up modem.
I just got off the phone with a Cox support rep and he was not helpful. He said "the numbers look good here!"
Looks like I will be switching to FIOS... |

The last time Cox upgraded speed from 3/4 to 4/5 for residedntial customers, they waited a long time before applying the upgrade to Cox Business Service customers.
Will this happen again when they upgrade from 4/5 to 5/15 next month?
I'm currently paying $69/month for SOHO service at 4mbps. How much will 15mbps service cost for a SOHO account?
Any replies appreciated... I have been calling the local CBS rep for 2 weeks now. After 8 voicemail messages, I still got no replies from them. |

What part of Fairfax are you in 'CoxSuxxxx'? I can upload at a steady 52KB in BitTorrent for however long I want and I never notice any hiccups. Also, I still have plenty bandwidth left for chatting and browsing. |
