Re: LNP - Packet8 to SunRocket sucess

It has now been 3 weeks since my number was ported from Packet8 to SunRocket. Callers from Packet8 still can not be connected to my number. All other incoming calls work well. Last week Packet8 assigned this same number to a new customer.

So they don't want the DTA-310 back? I just cancelled via email after 14 months and they said to send the DTA back or they would bill me $75. Maybe I should call them.

Just called P8 and quickly got a nice American girl who said I didn't have to send it back. Actually, that was the first time I've ever called them. I always did everything thru e-mail or came here to find out if there was an outage.

Packet8 bills through the end of the month regardless of when you cancel.

Both reps looked at my account and said I had no obligation to return the DTA. I started in August 2003. The terms have changed many times. Call them and see.

I did determine, with the help of BBR members, that calls from Packet8 to my ported number do not work. The calls do not ring my phone and get a busy signal on the callers end. I informed both Packet8 and SunRocket. I think it’s a routing issue on P8’s network. Anyone have any ideas?

My number was ported over a week ago and everything is working well. Not a single report of a missed call. I love the quality and quick connections.

My Packet8 login is closed and FWD to P8 rings busy. Anyone with Packet8 willing to call my number? This is the only additional test I can think of. Please PM me.

I must give Packet8 credit for consistency. My number ported Friday. I called Saturday and P8 agreed to cancel my account at the end of the billing cycle. I sent an email confirmation.

This morning my line was still working before I disconnected the DTA. I checked the portal and not only found it active, I had a June bill.

After a long hold listening to a recording as to how they were going to serve me, I spoke with a friendly rep. She saw the notes on my call but the account had not been closed. She needed to speak with Saturday's rep before she could finish the job. She finally confirmed the account would be closed, no money due and I did not need to return the equipment. A short time later I received an email confirmation and my login is now dead.

Anyone think I need to check my credit card?

if the packet8 line still works for outbound calls even after the number is ported to sunrocket, when you cancel packet8, will the number stop working with sunrocket?
I don't think so, but, we shall soon see.

The ported number seems to be working well with SunRocket. Both inbound and outbound calls sound great. No one has contacted me about a missed call. SunRocket's basic features are working predictably. My Packet8 line is still working for outbound calls.

Just curious, what is so bad about G.729?
I'm using G.729 with packet8 and ICH. (I'm using dta-310s with both) With ICH 90% of the time it is clearer than pots. With P8 it used to be and I think that it went down hill a bit when they went heavy with Level3 (just my guess). I do like the fact that with P8 the DTA is not used for call forwarding where some providers do have the call going through the device.
There is latency because the sip server has to do a little bit more work when connecting to pots but that 'should' have little to do with clarity.

My honest opinion of 729 is that it can be clearer than pots, sound like a cell phone, or be just terrible. I recommend trying a providers implement of that codec before taking the plunge.
It uses less bandwidth which can at times make all the difference in the world compared to 711. With Band width becoming bigger and cheaper for the consumer, I think that we will see more providers offering 711.

I am not sure about Bebop's experience, but the number I ported was my original Verizon number. The port went smooth. The day of the port a GLOBAL CROSSINGS rep called me on my SR line to test that the port indeed worked. I had my Verizon line and my Verizon-to-SR port available for another day before my Verizon line went dead.

Bebop-

Who is your local provider? That's who is actually doing the port, not SR. Maybe they messed something up during the port switch? You could call GLOBAL CROSSINGS or FOCAL COMMUNICATIONS' tech support to see if they can get your ported number fixed. SR only provisions the port but your number actually belongs to one of the local providers. The lady who called me from GLOBAL CROSSINGS to test the line told me to call GLOBAL CROSSINGS if there was ever a problem related to the port itself. I never had to, but it would provide another tech support option in a number-porting case like yours. If you call SR they open a ticket and contact your local provider to see what went wrong, if you call that provider directly you may get an immediate fix from the actual source of the problem.

Do you know if Packet8 has completely deleted your number from their system yet? My ported number rings SunRocket from Verizon and my cell but not from P8 at this time. If I dial the P8 prefix & number from FWD the number rings and works on P8. Can you determine which carriers the completed calls or failed calls originated from? Any patterns? It could be a problem with some carriers not routing your number to SunRocket.

What is SunRocket doing to fix this? Do they have any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else?

I hope you have better luck than me with porting you P8 number over to SR. I have nothing but trouble with the ported number. Sometimes it work some time it doesn't. I think I'm better off get rid of my old P8 number and use the new one from SR. Lucky SR allows two numbers, otherwise people calling me on the old P8 number will never get hold of me.

Does P8's using G.728 contribute to the lag? Why would a lower bandwidth CODEC lag more than G7.11u?
Yes it does. Reason? It takes time to compress g729 data on the outbound and decompress it on the inbound.
g711, according to some, is an uncompressed codec (thus saving the compression/decompression time).

CID name is not working for me. It's nice to see Packet8 allow porting numbers.

I called Packet8 today to terminate service. ...
I hope you told him.... G7.11u that is why I left!
At the time I didn't know the reason you left, and they seemed more interested in why I was leaving.

I told P8 their call latency or conversation lag was my primary complaint and the recovery fee the reason for the timing. I felt P8 should have fixed things before or at the same time they raised the price. Among other things, she said CID name was now working. It has not worked for me. Is it working for anyone?

I understood you could not port a VoIP number. Has this changed?
I spoke to P8 on the phone the other day and they said it was not a problem to port to another company.

It's luck of the draw. VoIP providers aren't required to let their numbers be ported. However, Packet8 has been pretty good about letting people do it.
I thought if the number is a ported one to begin with, they have to allow you to port it again? Or maybe I am making things up again.
