You really expect most Americans to think there is a language besides English? 
For me it was Parisian French thinking that might be usefull living neare Quebec.... no, speaking Parisian French there you might as well be speaking English 
Maybe better understoood, but just as maligned in treatment (at least 15-25 years ago)
But at least I could read the signs and get around (or to a restroom on my own
Difference between us and most countries.... they learn second language from early childhood and it is an inate part of just learning... here it is in high school if at all where by then it is a real CHORE!

If you look at how the backbone of this country has degraded because US companies have allowed the Chinese to design, manufacture molding & produce parts for them, thus eliminating the work force needed here; this is where learning Chinese becomes a must. Very sad!
