I called Packet8 today to terminate service. They answered quickly, agreed to cancel my service as of the last day of the May billing cycle, confirmed I was paid through that date and had no further obligation or money due. The rep did ask why I wanted to cancel and if there was anything P8 could do to keep my business.
I hope you told him.... G7.11u that is why I left!

Just curious, what is so bad about G.729?

At the time I didn't know the reason you left, and they seemed more interested in why I was leaving.

I told P8 their call latency or conversation lag was my primary complaint and the recovery fee the reason for the timing. I felt P8 should have fixed things before or at the same time they raised the price. Among other things, she said CID name was now working. It has not worked for me. Is it working for anyone?

CID name is not working for me. It's nice to see Packet8 allow porting numbers.

Does P8's using G.728 contribute to the lag? Why would a lower bandwidth CODEC lag more than G7.11u?

Yes it does. Reason? It takes time to compress g729 data on the outbound and decompress it on the inbound.
g711, according to some, is an uncompressed codec (thus saving the compression/decompression time).

I'm using G.729 with packet8 and ICH. (I'm using dta-310s with both) With ICH 90% of the time it is clearer than pots. With P8 it used to be and I think that it went down hill a bit when they went heavy with Level3 (just my guess). I do like the fact that with P8 the DTA is not used for call forwarding where some providers do have the call going through the device.
There is latency because the sip server has to do a little bit more work when connecting to pots but that 'should' have little to do with clarity.

My honest opinion of 729 is that it can be clearer than pots, sound like a cell phone, or be just terrible. I recommend trying a providers implement of that codec before taking the plunge.
It uses less bandwidth which can at times make all the difference in the world compared to 711. With Band width becoming bigger and cheaper for the consumer, I think that we will see more providers offering 711.
