Try IE, if that makes any difference. Maybe it's something on your side.

I travel a lot and notice that google continually routes traffic to the nearest server. So when in Italy, even if I type in www.google.com, I get routed to Google Italy. Perhaps your local google server was down. The next time you may want to try other google servers (www.google.xx where xx are the various country suffixes such as IT, FR, etc.) to see if this is the source of the problem.

google has failed!
More than likely, that was just a DNS failure.
I actually encountered a true "broken google" a few days ago.

It's not down but it has been really really slow to load or lookup anything for me for the past two-three days or so.

So much so that I took it out as my homepage.

I think it is DNS server problem, but you can call google servers by IP
wwww.google.com
66.102.7.104,
66.102.7.147,
66.102.7.99
google.com
216.239.37.99,
216.239.39.99,
216.239.57.99

Looks like Google is having DNS problems again as of 7:40PM EST. The IP's listed above work, but entering in Google.com doesn't. It points to SoGoSearch.com

Hmm... Going to google.com/search results in the "URL not found" error, but like I said, the IP's listed still work. Not really a big deal for me. All of the subdomains such as video.google.com, images.google.com, etc work though.

Edit: works now

Not down here in Springfield, IL. on SBCDSL. I would say it is a DNS issue out of India and other places.
