Whether you've never shopped on the Internet before, have made a few purchases, or are a seasoned Net shopper, the information in this Buyer's Guide can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars over the course of a few months. Perhaps you've already made a few purchases from some of the major web sites. If you did, you probably OVERPAID by as much as HUNDREDS of dollars - if not more! And that's what this Buyer's Guide is about. It is the result of thousands of hours of research and extensive experience by our staff, as well as comments and suggestions by our customers. Unfortunately, very few people know how to get the very best deals on the Net. With the information here, you can be one of the privileged few.
Then again, all the savings in the world mean nothing if you wind up not getting merchandise you paid for, or getting defective products, or just plain getting ripped off. Quite a few articles in major magazines (including recent articles in PC Week and Home Office Computing) mention the not insubstantial amount of fraud occurring over the Internet. Most web merchants are honest and legitimate, but unfortunately there are a few rip-off artists out there, and it only takes one bad purchase to turn you off shopping on the Net forever. With this Buyer's Guide, we can help you avoid the disreputable web merchants and steer you towards solid, reliable sources for all your needs.
A note about "Buyer's Guides" in magazines: You've probably seen "Buyer's Guides" in some magazines promising you "great buys" on various products. Don't believe it! Usually these "Buyer's Guides" feature a small handful of links to a few web sites with little or no description as to what you'll find on these sites, and often no site ratings or any way to tell which sites are worth visiting and which ones are not. These "Buyer's Guides" represent only a small fraction of the publishing space and effort of a magazine, and are thus very limited in both scope and substance. On the other hand, the Buyer's Guide you are reading here is the result of thousands of hours of extensive research by our staff. Unlike the part-time operations of magazines, our Buyer's Guide is a full-time project - it's what we do for a living, so we have to make sure it's not just good but truly great. Case in point: a few months ago, a major computer magazine published a "Bargain Shopping Guide" that consisted of only six links. Upon checking these sites, our staff discovered that one of the sites was no longer in service and two other sites had merged into a single site. Even more disturbing, one of the sites listed is a site that we know from our extensive research has had problems fulfilling its obligations to its customers. No doubt some readers of this major computer magazine went to this site, placed an order, and found that their "bargains" weren't quite what they bargained for! On the other hand, anyone who had the information contained in the Buyer's Guide you're reading now would have known to avoid the site, since we check sites before we list them and don't list sites that we know customers have had problems with. A final point: Many of the sites listed in magazine "Buyer's Guides" are major websites that don't offer those "hard-to-find" bargains like those listed here. Remember that magazines are heavily dependent upon advertising, and thus may provide site listings that satisfy the demands of their advertisers rather than the needs of their readers. On the other hand, you can be sure the Buyer's Guide you're reading now is unbiased and objective, since we don't accept advertising or any other form of payment from the sites listed here. Quite a few of the sites listed here are "hard-to-find" - you won't find these sites listed in magazines. These sites offer great bargains by keeping their overhead low, which unfortunately doesn't leave much money for advertising, unlike the "big boys" who spend lavishly on advertising and then pass the costs on to their customers. These treasure troves of bargains may be hard to find - but you'll find them here.
Format Note: We have made some changes to sections of the Buyer's Guide format. We now feature Quick-At-A-Glance tables so you can easily narrow down your choices. The first table is sorted by alphabetical order by site, the second table by ratings with the highest-rated sites appearing first. Once you've picked out the site(s) you're interested in dealing with, have a look at the more detailed listings which appear after the tables and are sorted by alphabetical order by site. As always, we check sites for reliability and do not list those sites which we are aware have a history of problems in meeting their obligations to customers. This in itself is a very useful service; a recent issue of PC World magazine pointed out that there are a number of Internet shopping sites that rip off their customers. Hopefully, the information provided here can help you steer clear of these dubious sites. The Guide's site ratings are based primarily on a site's product selection and prices, as well as other factors we deem to be important. Since we are not related to these web sites or conduct any business with or accept any payments from them, you can be sure that these ratings (as well as the other information provided in this Buyer's Guide) are unbiased and objective.

Hints & Tips
Shipping: Check shipping & handling charges carefully for an item - in fact, you should consider these charges to be a part of the item's final price. Some sites can charge quite a bit for even relatively small (and light) items, making them less of a bargain than they first appear to be. For example, a $35 shipping charge on a $1,000 computer system is not a lot - but a $35 shipping charge on $60 memory is. Some sites offer a variety of shipping methods such as expedited and two-day shipping. Obviously, the more you pay for a shipping, the faster you can expect to receive the item, so consider how long you're willing to wait to receive the item versus the shipping & handling charge you'll pay.
Brand Names: If you're looking for the best buys in computer equipment, you should think about avoiding the "brand names" like IBM and Dell and look for smaller, lesser-known brands. In a recent Dell advertisement, Dell tells us to ask their (presumably lower-priced) competitors if they are a multi-billion-dollar computer company like Dell. And why, one might ask, is Dell a multi-billion-dollar computer company? Simply because of the prices they charge for their systems. The big "brand-name" companies like Dell and IBM can afford to spend massive amounts of money to advertise their products (money that's ultimately paid for by purchasers of their products) and many people unfortunately equate this large amount of advertising with quality. The truth is, the basic components that make up most computers are fundamentally similar - same processors, same video cards, same hard drives, etc. - regardless of which brand you buy. This is not to knock IBM or Dell or Compaq or any other big computer companies, but just be aware that when you pay more (sometimes much more) for one of these "name-brand" systems what you are paying extra for is the logo on the box - and often nothing else.
Refurbished Products: If you're really looking to save money, do consider refurbished products. Many of the refurbished products being offered are in "like-new" condition. Pay particular attention to the warranty. Some refurbished products only come with a token 90-day warranty, which is rather minimal. Look for products that come with at least a 180-day warranty; a year or more is even better.
Warranty Concerns: Most of the equipment being offered is new and in good condition, but problems do occasionally occur. Most products do come with a manufacturer's warranty (see the specific product listings on the auction sites for details). Many products are manufactured by large companies such as IBM, Hewlett Packard, etc. and companies such as these usually have service centers located in many areas that will repair or replace a product for you should a problem arise. In some cases, for instance if you don't live near a repair facility, you may need to send the product in for repair or replacement. In any case, be sure to read the warranty information carefully before buying or bidding on an item.
Comparison Shopping Information
One of the most exciting developments in Internet shopping is the advent of comparison shopping services. Basically, you type in the item you wish to purchase, and these services search hundreds of on-line stores to find the best prices for you. (Consider how long it would take you to search 200-300 web sites manually for the product you're interested in.) Using these services, you can easily save hundreds of dollars on your purchases by finding the best prices and save yourself countless hours of searching through hundreds of web sites for that great buy. These services are so far little-known, but by reading the following information you'll be among the privileged few who have access to these wonderful services - and they're all free for you to use! Using these services can save you a great deal of time - hundreds of hours - of manually searching through web sites yourself. And the prices you can get are incredible!

Auction Hints & Tips
A few of the sites included here are auction sites. A few tips to help you shop smart on these sites follow:
* Before you participate in an auction, read the auction rules carefully. This may seem like an obvious thing to do, but you'd be surprised at the number of people who fail to read the rules and then complain about the auction site. To give you an example of typical auction rules, you can start by reading the "Sample Auction Rules" below.
* Some auction sites will (at your request) send you e-mail regarding new products as they become available for bidding. If you're really interested, you can ask to be added to the auction site's mailing list.
* Some auction sites, when bidding, give you the option of an "all-or-nothing" bid for quantity purchases. This usually means that (for example) if you bids for three quantities of an item and only win the bidding for two, then you will not receive any items at all. You can use this option if you absolutely MUST have a specific quantity of an item and won't settle for less.
Sample Auction Rules
The following rules represent the rules of a typical auction. Auction rules can vary widely, and as noted above it is VERY IMPORTANT that you read and understand an auction's rules before you decide to participate.
Bids win as follows:
* Bids with higher prices win over bids with lower prices.
* If bids are for the same price, the bids with larger quantities win over bids with smaller quantities
* If bids are for same price and quantity, then earlier bids will win over later bids.
The Best Time to Bid in an Auction
The best times to bid at an auction are summarized in the table below, and are followed by an explanation for each variable listed in the table. Please note that this table should be used as a guideline only; the "best" time to bid at an auction varies widely.

Large Bid Increment vs. Small Bid Increment: If you're bidding on an item where the bid increment (the price a bid must be raised to "win" the item) is relatively small, as it is for less expensive items such as printers and scanners, you might wish to wait until almost the closing time of the auction to find out what others have bid to decide whether you want to bid on the item or not. On the other hand, if the item has a fairly large bid increment (as more expensive items like computers usually do), you may wish to bid early in the hope that you can get the item at a lower bid.
Light Bidding Action vs. Heavy Bidding Action: There are two reasons for bidding later if an item you wish to bid on is experiencing heavy bidding action. The first reason is that the heavy bidding action means you will likely be outbid rather quickly, making early bids a waste of time. The second reason is that heavy bidding can dramatically raise an item's price; in this case it is wise to wait until later to see what sort of price the item is going for before you decide whether you want to bid or not.
Large Quantity of Item Available vs. Small Quantity of Item Available: If there is a large quantity of an item available you can bid early with less of a chance of being outbid due to the larger quantity of the item available. On the other hand, if an item is available in small quantities, you will likely be outbid fairly quickly if you bid early.

PERSON-TO-PERSON AUCTIONS
Most of the auction sites listed here are "dealer-type" auctions, where the products for auction are being offered by actual dealers or manufacturers or even the auction site itself. In such cases, you can be pretty much assured that you'll get what you paid for, and that if there are problems with the product they'll usually be taken care of. A few sites, however, are "person-to-person" auctions, where the sellers are individuals. Although person-to-person auctions can get you some great buys, be aware that the auction site is generally not responsible for the delivery of an item you've paid for - there are more than a number of people (as many as 8%-15%, according to a recent survey) who've lost money on person-to-person auctions and never received the items they paid for - recent articles in PC World and other magazines went into some details about this.

Yo guys, I found this forum on google search when I aksed "is this real"? So, what I also wanna know is where for sure I can get cheap stuff. Edirect club seems too unreal, also because they don't work with credit cards, only checks, and checks are like if they receive 'em, they can just take the money, you know. And they have sent me a letter, where it said that their international department is in Canada, why? Why not in U.S.? So only after it, I started to suspect and went to google. Not like I paid, naaa. I only wrote my email to them and they sent me an automated letter where they told me where and when to pay.
