While the cable companies keep hosing you guys with rate increases every year,
hmm.. you must have not seen the rate increases both DirecTV and Dish Network have done in the last two years, with many more to come now that they have the taste of that.
well the last time a saw the cable bill they lowerd it 79.00$ from 179 to 100 ( cause i got cable internet 59.99 7.8mbps down 1mbps up)( why would i want to PAY A 100$ a month just for slow dial up satellite internet ) MUCH FASTER THEN satellite and better ping times 1000ms how am i going to play games with that high of a ping? even Dial up has faster ping times then satellite internet

TV price (40,01$ ) internet price 59.99 (was free For 6 months)

Re: This is great news

That's not a very convincing argument.
I somewhat agree that municiple franchises may be irrelevent these days with, what, four cable providers. If all the PA muni's sign with Comcast except one, what competitor is going to service that one holdout community?

Such a setup made much more sense back when there were multiple cable providers willing to service any area they could access.

BUT I think each municipality has every right to ensure their community is 'provided for'. Maybe a Statewide Franchise IS a good idea, but the franchisee should have to agree to related conditions, perhaps like:
-ensuring every community has the same service options as every other.
-every community has reasonable access to Public Access facilities
-there are enough support options for each community
-service level agreements
etc.

Likewise, the State should ensure a portion of the franchise fee makes it back to each community (based on the subscribers?) so they don't suddenly lose that income and so the State is less-likely to approve the concept solely due to 'dollar-sign eyes'.

What's your argument for why statewide franchises are a good thing?
Anything that the government at all levels can do to get out of the way of any private broadband deployment is a good thing.

So you won't be complaining when FIOS and/or whatever SBC's equivalent in TX doesn't get deployed?

I really dont care if FIOS gets deployed, what do we need that speed for anyway?

BTW I have fiber on my block as per a SBC tech that came out to the aprt next door and he showed me the line that is on the pole going down the block so yes its here where i live but NO thanks SBC

My DirecTV bill actually went down when they re-organized their rate structure a couple years ago. It looks like it's gone up by $2 since I left.

Cable is a good deal right now for me only because I'm into HDTV and DVR. $60+ per month for Digital Classic (which is what I consider to be roughly equivalent to DirecTV's $42 plan) is a total rip-off, I feel sorry for people who aren't into HD and DVR who aren't getting value out of that high price.

Good Job TX . I am happy i live in this state. if the cable providers have to go to every city why should it be any different for the phone comp's

I don't get it. People here whine about this country dropping in the rankings of broadband penetration (why this matters, I don't understand) but then they praise stupid laws like these which discourage enhanced broadband services deployment by the private sector.

Yah, thats a great way to look at it. While the cable companies keep hosing you guys with rate increases every year, be happy that your ignorant state is hindering the speedup process of competition to cable TV.
