Why is it, that if I were to change addresses, I would all of a sudden be eligible for the newly lowered prices when I am still under a CONTRACT!!???
When you move, you have "new" DSL line under a new one year contract. That makes us eligible for "new" circuit pricing at which point we we can pass on the savings to you. I agree that the SBC wholesale pricing is very skewed in this regard and we are trying to convince SBC to change their policy.
What about an upgrade? Would that qualify for "new" circuit pricing? Check out this quote from another ISP RE SBC:

My only complaint: SBC appears to be offering $14.95/mo service. Can you meet or beat that, Sonic?
At this point, we cannot. SBC's got us locked in for your loop on the current cost for your circuit, which is actually a little over $20 in total (no counting our costs for bandwidth, support, staffing, servers here, etc).

As it is, the pricing is a loss leader - and we can't drop it to match their new retail rate unfortunatly. I'm sorry!

That said - we may be able to get you a good price on a faster link if you're interested in upgrading, and if you qualify for 3.0Mbps. It's possible that an upgrade (and thus, new contract and new wholesale price point) might let us get more aggressive. If you're interested in having me check this for you, please send me an email, and include your Sonic.net login.

Ya well, I am a verizon dslextreme customer and including tax I pay $32/ mo BUT I am very happy with the sevice. Dynamic IP and a piece of cake to set up. Don't forget to get a router to protect yourself from virus and other intrusions (sorry you will still get spyware)and you can surf from multiple computers.

We have a project on our plate for something similar to that. I don't have a specific time frame of when that will be rolled out at this time though.

Hang in there guys! DSLextreme has been good to us and a great alternative to SBC. To make up for the difference in price, just refer more people and earn some credits! I just wish they could make a link that our referral could click on that will automatically enter our ID for credit. I've lost many referral credits because they couldn't follow instructions on entering my user name.
Oh I like the idea of a linke for referrals! DSLX, what do you think?

In the event of changing local/address/moving, where does it fit in, that these instances are either charged a transfer fee or get a get out of contract free card? I am trying to get the most bang for my buck and ended up signing up for the $50/month 6mb/6o8kb. Currently $22/month 1.5mb/384kb and would have liked to get the new 3mb/512kb service for the new $25/month. I spent time with online support and over the telephone billing and neither could set me up with the new lowered price of the 3mb/512kb service since I was in a CONTRACT!! Why is it, that if I were to change addresses, I would all of a sudden be eligible for the newly lowered prices when I am still under a CONTRACT!!??? Is this fair to the customer base who currently pay higher prices based on when they signed up and cannot do anything about it? except maybe move heh

My Account page said I could renew for $24.95/month up until I checked today. Currently on the $21.95 promotion. Now it says I am not eligible for an upgrade or downgrade, but to call them for information. Probably tired of all the complaints.

Still confused. Let me ask in a clearer way. What price would I pay for the 1500 rate (current customer) if my contract were to expire now, and I were to sign another contract?

(Thanks for the quick reply)

About 30 days before your contract expires you should get an email from us informing you that your contract is about to expire. It will direct you on what to do to renew your contract at the rate that we are offering current clients at that time. I would recommend that you check what is available when your contract is about to expire. Since pricing is always changing it is hard to say for sure.

I'm not sure whats going on, but I know that I'm currently in a contract paying $27(including fees) a month for the 1500 rate.

I want to know if when my contract is over, and I sign a new contract, can I get the new promotional prices? (Or something lower then what I'm paying now maybe 19.99[with contract] if the promotion is 14.99)

I vastly prefer DSL Extreme's simple approach of a form on their website to get unblocked, vs. just getting surprise blocking with no recourse.

Just easy, not super-easy. SBC does have such a form on their web site. However, the last time that I checked the SBC TOS, they did not allow me to run a server as a public service to other parties from their dynamic IP address pools. On top of which, a large segment of the SBC PPPoX pools are blocked at the remote end. It would do me no good to run an end-to-end SMTP client because AOL, among others, blocks my IP address. The last time I checked, I was in the NAJBL block list; and, because I don't control the ptr record, I don't have standing to request that NJABL remove my IP address from their list.

DSLX actually does more than just let you request unblocking. With their static IP addresses, they make it much easier (here is where "super-easy" is good!) to set up a ptr record for your IP address. You can request them (for a fee, I think) to set up a ptr record with your domain in it, so an rDNS lookup will match your domain name. That is something which the AOL MX servers check.

My DNS:
06/09/05 13:41:17 dns aosake.net
Mail for aosake.net is handled by aosake.net
Canonical name: aosake.net
Addresses:
66.125.89.41
My rDNS:
06/09/05 13:42:24 Dns 66.125.89.41
nslookup 66.125.89.41
Canonical name: adsl-66-125-89-41.dsl.sntc01.pacbell.net
Addresses:
66.125.89.41
The AOL MX servers won't release me from their block, NJABL won't release me from their block, and there are MX servers who, seeing a mismatch between forward, and reverse DNS lookup, also block access to their port 25. In my case, having port 25 unblocked by SBC would only be useful if I needed access to a mail submission server which didn't listen on port 465, or port 587. There are just too many places who would block my access to their MX servers to make it worth the effort to run a server which connects to other people's MX servers.

With static IP address service, even SBC will change a ptr record; but DSLX actually has instructions for this, while SBC leaves it a dark secret. I am not sure what format DSLX would actually use; but something like, "dsl-66-125-89-41.static.mx.aosake.net", would work for me. Even SBC allows customers to run mail servers on their static IP address DSL plans.

P.S. There is a link on this page to request an unblock:

said by NormanS See ProfileSpam is a royal pain. SBC could not seem to get an adequate handle on all of their customers with spam 'bots running on their computers; not that the customers knew that the 'bots were there. Until SBC put the block on port 25 I routinely got spam from SBC customer computers which had no business being used for commercial advertisements. Since SBC implemented the blocks, spam from Trojanized customer computers has dropped significantly.

I have no trouble accessing non-SBC SMTP servers, and port 25 is still blocked on my account. It was easier, quicker, to configure my email clients to use port 465 (MyRealBox), or port 587 (GMail and GMX Mail).
[/BQUOTE:

I actually agree. Spam SUCKS, and if the blocking helps, then it is good.

However, it should be super-easy for more technically adept clients who aren't spamming to get the port opened. I happen to own my own email server which many of my friends and family use. I vastly prefer DSL Extreme's simple approach of a form on their website to get unblocked, vs. just getting surprise blocking with no recourse.

Also, when I tried to call SBC about the email issue, the support person had no idea about why my family could suddenly not send email through my server. Sure would be nice if the phone support even at "level 1" had a basic understanding of changes to service. A response like "oh, we started blocking port 25" would have been nice, vs. me having to figure it out for myself.

My server supports alternate ports, so I just switched my family over. But I did have to reconfigure email on 5 machines, after driving out to their house to troubleshoot. Clicking the button on DSL Extreme's website to unblock sure would have been easier on me. SBC doesn't give me that option, and just assumes their customers are criminals, I guess.

Re: OMG DSL for $14.95 per month!

As was pointed out in the other thread, DSLX would be losing money re-rating people already in a contract. In some businesses it makes sense to allow re-rates with a new contract (e.g. cell phones), but in this case, given SBC is kind of man handling DSLX into this policy, I don't think it makes sense to penalize DSLX for what SBC is forcing upon them. Personally, if it were me, I would GLADLY pay $5/mo extra if it meant I could have DSLX instead of SBC. Availability of DHCP over PPPoE in my mind is worth the $5 alone, let alone their excellent service, peering, and amenities.

As a rule I don't support companies that work this way. As a current customer you should get the same terms as a new customer, as long as your willing to start a new contract. This is a terrible business practice that basically takes advantage of the very customers keeping the business going. I switched to cable from Dish for this very reason. As soon as my DSLX contract is up I'll probably dump them too. After all they don't appreciate my business, or they wouldn't be offering new customers faster service for less than I'm/we're paying. People really should make an effort not to support companies that have these types of policies. If enough people stand up, the nonsense might stop. Basically all the current customers are subsidizing the new customer's great rate. What a way for DSLX to thank you for choosing them over all it's competitors. Thank you DSLX!

Just a guess/assumption from what happened last year. DSLX was underselling SBC-Yahoo prices for the 1536/384 plan throughout the fall. I couldn't understand why SBCIS wasn't using the promotion and cutting their prices.

Rob, SBCIS apparently didn't offer the Oct. 19, 2004 through Jan. 31, 2005 promotion to their customers when DSLX did, so there are no SBC-Yahoo customers on a promotional price plan.
