I'm in that battle of stay with DSL Extreme and the Almighty George for $10 extra a month or take my chances with SBC tech support from India and pay the lesser amount. Give me some input on what you all think.
For $120 to cover the next year ($10/month diff), that difference would be well worth it to me. I really don't need any more aggravation in my life, and that kind of large-corp/off-shore "support" is a huge negative.

But of course, I'm happy with the $60/month 6000/608 plan. Life is short, why not be happy when you can?

Cheers,
- Don

I can't believe you americans put up with contracts, our canadian isp's have no contracts and I currently get 7mb down and 1mb up for about $55 canadian including taxes.

Tried to re-rate yesterday, and got the runaround. I was told that since I was a current customer, I couldn't re-rate at $14.95. I was told that I had to do it online. Then when I told him I tried to do that, but the SBC website told me to call their customer service. Then I was told that it's only for new customers. The best Philip from SBC would do for me was $29.95 for 1 year, if I agreed to a $48.95 calling plan. Hung up on him and signed up for DSLExtreme.

We deal with contracts, you deal with bandwidth caps. We can choose to pay a little more per month and not have a contract, do you have that option when it comes to caps?

SBC wouldn't even re-rate me to the $19.95 per month promotional price. My understanding is that I would have to call their retention department and perform some song and dance routine about jumping to Comcast; possibly DSLX if by switching from SBC Yahoo! DSL Service I was qualified for any new customer price plans.

I didn't feel good about lying to retention...

The no contract price is $49.95 per month. The contract isn't a bad deal when it results in a lower price. Part of the contract issue may be a government intervention. SBC is covered by the California Public Utilities Commission.

Quite interesting that I haven't seen a DSLX rep reply to the thread. I heard their hands were tied on the re-rate on current contract customers.

My contract will be up in about 4 months, and I'm going to be quite interested in what the pricing is going turn out then. If SBC is going to be cheaper.. I might bite the bullet and switch.

Quality Service

By participating in this forum I know you understand that at DSLExtreme quality is number one. We understand that clients look for, expect and deserved the highest quality of service. From our 24 hour in house phone support to the CEO and GM personally monitoring this forum and day-to-day operations you can clearly see that quality is number one. Our 3 year ratings here on BBR compared to the phone and cables companies are clear proof of it.

DSLExtreme is a much smaller niche player in the market that focuses on providing our clients with quality service and differentiates ourselves in that manner. That being said we have still always been very competitive in price. You can come to our site and find that at any given time our pricing can be a couple of bucks lower or higher than the major telephone companies and always far cheaper than the cable companies. We always try to offer new clients and current clients the best possible deals and pass on the saving to them whenever possible.

Promotional packages and pricing is normally done in conjunction with a SBC-ASI promotion for use of the phone line. Unfortunately the current SBC-ASI promotion is only for new clients. The cost for use of the phone line for current clients already in service is higher than the current retail pricing. If we were to re-rate clients at the lower rate we would be taking a loss on those clients.

As many of our clients have already mentioned in this thread, quality service is worth a few bucks extra per month. The experience with DSLExtreme is much like that of a nice restaurant. We are always ready to provide you with high quality service compared to SBC or Verizon that much like a fast food company can leave a bad taste in your mouth.

I am confident that our clients know the value of high quality service and value the extra amenities that we offer. To name a few:

•5 Dynamic Connections via DHCP
•No Port Blocking
•In house, Los Angeles based, 24-7 Technical Support (Not outsourced to India)
•Extensive private peering, top notch bandwidth providers, gamer specific peering and a fully redundant network.
•Free Modem Leases that are warranteed by DSLX for as long as you have the service.
•Server side firewall
•Email service with anti-spam, anti-virus and anti-phishing filters. As well as the peace of mind knowing that your information has not been sold to Yahoo Marketing.
•Referral Program that allows you to earn money towards your service.

Most importantly the CEO and GM participating in these forums and not only providing support at all hours of the day but taking our valued clients feedback and implementing new features based on that feedback. Ever interacting directly with SBC CEO, Ed Whitacre or top management via BBR IM?

"Where our Clients Matter Most” will always our motto at DSLExtreme. That coupled with quality service will always be worth a couple extra bucks.

Thanks,
George

Re: OMG DSL for $14.95 per month!

DO you all understand Economics? Yes, There is a Broadband War, but it's not at the below average tiers Yet. The Speeds are going up due to competition rather than the price decreasing for sub par service. This all depends on Market Demand and the cable companies really have not introduced a third tier that would compete with these prices.

Thanks for the info George. I'll use those points when convincing my referrals why they shouldn't choose SBC over DSLx.

Re: OMG DSL for $14.95 per month!

If the SBC-ASI terms are preventing you from re-rating customers, you and other independent ISPs should consider ganging up and filing a complaint against SBC, since they are allowing their customers to do it. There are several threads in SBC forums documenting people's successes in re-rating.

I definitely recognize and appreciate DSLExtreme's commitment towards a higher quality service. I think you guys reach a perfect balance between high quality service and reasonable pricing. I do, however, think you need to address the 3mbps Verizon plan's pricing. I am having a very hard time referring others to your service in Verizon areas because of that. They've all seen the '3mbps for $30' advertisements (even if they don't need 3mbps) and don't understand why you want $15 more per month for it.

George, I have several times used your personal participation in this forum as the ultimate example of how a business can properly do customer service and support. You are a shining example of how business *should* be done everywhere.

I am currently in frequent contact with execs at a major VOIP company (everyone is a startup, feeling their way in that industry). I keep explaining to them that, instead of stonewalling customers and ignoring their complaints, they should be upper-level proactive like you and DSLX -- because in the long run, that's the best for *everyone*, even if its expensive in personal time and committment. And, that's the operative word here, and the thing that makes me feel so great about being a DSLX customer: the *committment* I see here.

As you point out, one can choose to compete at the lowest possible price point and ultimately be a whore to price (like the fast foods you mention), or one can compete at the service level and keep the business and the customer healthy. Somehow DLSX manages to provides both quality service, even extended services not offered by others, and at a very attractive price point.

For those wanting to save that very last dollar, I advise: go someplace else and spent the rest of your time chasing it. For everyone else, DSLX is a bargain and is quality to boot. There are very few class operations like DSLX and even fewer folks like George who *really* care.

There may be times when it's more than a few dollars difference between DSLX and other ISPs (hopefully DSLX will catch up then), and sometimes it may be a difficult decision, but IMO, DSLX is *the* only choice to make. Thank you George for all your help and participation here, and for enduring all that you do.

Just an opinion of an old man with 30+ years in the industry,
- Don

My hands are also tied. I don't pay the DSL service fees. If I did, I would switch from SBC to DSLX in a heartbeat. As it is, I can't get re-rated for less than the $26.95 per month we are currently billed, unless I contact SBC's retention department and lie through my teeth. I prefer to keep my ethics up to the standard that DSLX seems to hold, not lower my ethics to SBC's level.

We are having a similar discussion to this on the Comcast TV forum. Personally I don't consider it an ethics problem to discuss pricing issues with retention in order to get a new customer deal. Why, as an existing loyal customer, should we be paying more than some "new customer"? Why can't we all just share a reasonably low price? It seems like the only thing that companies care about these days is luring new customers in, and hoping that "lazy" people who don't pay close attention to their bills subsidize them. I don't think that's very ethical, either. These sort of restrictions beg for customers to play ping-pong between ISPs when the contracts expire.

That's why I like my 6000/608k price freeze plan. I don't need to play any of these stupid games, its just a prepetual good value for the money. It's unfortunate it's not available on more of their plans.

Re: Quality Service

Yea I know. But all I'm say is that if SBC is going to go super cheap and DSLX can't even lower the price a bit..

Thanks for the reply though. Nice to see you guys still check threads .. Sorry if I sounded a bit harsh on you guys .. I really love the service.

I've also just checked the rates on DSLX's site and noticed that the prices have dropped to pretty much match SBC's offer and that's great news. I look forward into signing another contract

george that sounds like pr to me. 5 dynamics ip is nice but most people don't need or care about having that many. Not sure if SBC blocks ports so not comment on that. SBC from i know has in house 24/7 support. No idea about what kind of peering etc they have.SBC provides free lease on modem for as long as you have the service(used to have them.) Personally do not care about side firewall not sure about other people. Same goes for anti-spam, anti-virus and anti-phishing filters. As for yahoo marketing never had a problem with that. SBC have tech monitor forum at all times and do help a lot. Only thing that keeping me with you guys is that i am on 6mb freeze plan, if not for that i would probably jump ship

edit:correction.sbc block outgoing only 25 block. Incoming port 135, 139, 445 and 1025 blocked

I have had my contract expire twice on dslextreme. Last year I cancelled and resubscribed. The downtime was longer thatn promised.
This year I saw that again the price was $19.95 for new subscribers but $24.95 for me. They are now down to $14.95 for new subscribers but even with calling I could only get $19.95.

Would safeway charge me 33% more for a gallon of milk because I'm a regular customer?
I was willing to pay more than sbc... but, the principle of charging loyal customers more just stuck in my craw.

hello sbc

Thats nice. Bye.

Can't blame DSLX for not wanting to take a loss on you. They love you as a customer so long as they're making money on you. If you insist on them losing money on you as a client, I'm sure they'll show you the door in short order.
