I got my credit for my referral who signed up Sunday for $19.95, but he says he better get the $14.95 rate since he's not even activated yet. |

| reply to The Way Out What's wrong with them picking a rate that makes them a profit and charging the same rate for the same service to everybody. If they are worth more then they will still get new customers AND retain the goodwill of their installed base. We're talking about a new contract and new commitment. The only difference is that the present customer is already hooked up. |

| If I was on that packackage it would be totally worth it to me to pay an extra $5/month to stay with dslextreme than the hassle of changing ISP's and just because dslextreme is a better ISP anyway. I have had dslextreme for a bout 1 year and 2 months and have never been dissatisfied with their service. -- Sprint ION = 4650/880 Adelphia = 3300/122, Charter Pipeline = 1540/100 man cable upload sux dont it? And man! my download/upload speed just keeps getting lower and lower doesnt it? Now: DSLExtreme 5400/540 (sustained) finally back up to a great connection |

| reply to ylen131 Re: Quality Service
I'm a brand new DSLE customer, and haven't even gotten my line tuned to where I want it yet. However, I feel the need to respond to ylen13's post post:
- re: 5 IPs: Static IP's are extremely valuable to a LOT of people. I wouldn't even consider a service with fewer than 5, and I am not alone. - re: SBC port blocking: I can tell you from personal experience that this is a royal pain. I had to reconfigure all 5 computers at my sister-in-laws house when SBC suddenly decided to block their ability to use the email server I provided them with. - re: peering: Look into it. It's really important, and can make a big difference in your browsing/gaming experience. DSLE gives me great routes to all the hosts I hit regularly. - re: support: From my experience so far, DSLE is basically the best level of support out there. I have spoken to their support people about 6 times so far via instant chat and phone. Never have I had to wait more than a minute or so for a person. I have a $300/month sDSL line also, and the wait times for that service are nowhere near as short as DSLE. Also, every person I've spoken with at DSLE has been technically knowledgeable and spoken to me as a peer. My conversations with SBC have been painful. 30 minute wait times, first level support people that are just clueless, and unable to comprehend that I know what I'm talking about.
I feel the need to respond because I don't think "customer support" is a PR thing for DSLE, but a reality. I'm sure some people will choose other vendors for various reasons, including maybe price. SBC is definitely cheap, but you get what you pay for. Horrible support and lots of dropped connections may be part of the price you pay. After supporting SBC at my sister-in-laws house full of teenagers, I'm ready to get them on DSLE as soon as I can. |

I had to reconfigure all 5 computers at my sister-in-laws house when SBC suddenly decided to block their ability to use the email server I provided them with. Spam is a royal pain. SBC could not seem to get an adequate handle on all of their customers with spam 'bots running on their computers; not that the customers knew that the 'bots were there. Until SBC put the block on port 25 I routinely got spam from SBC customer computers which had no business being used for commercial advertisements. Since SBC implemented the blocks, spam from Trojanized customer computers has dropped significantly.
I have no trouble accessing non-SBC SMTP servers, and port 25 is still blocked on my account. It was easier, quicker, to configure my email clients to use port 465 (MyRealBox), or port 587 (GMail and GMX Mail). -- Norman ~A deam, dream, no dream ~Voices of the night go across the forest ~A dream, dream, no dream ~Good night my good child |

1 edit | reply to mkrueger mkrueger I been using dsl since 99, I got at my old when they still did professional installation. The only reason why i am staying with dslextreme is because of 5 static ip, if i didn't have that plan i would change. I never had problem with sbc blocking ports, thing may have change since 3 years ago. I am not running my own email server so that could be the difference. My pings were low with sbc except during the time when they had overload problem, that got correct, i am pretty sure that dsextreme was also experiencing it if it was already around. Regarding customer support it all depends what time you call sbc and dsextreme. I had 1 sec wait for sbc and 30 min and same for dslextreme. It all depends if there is outage going on or not. Regarding technical support it self. Level 1 at sbc is designed for new users, once you get pass that level 2 and 3 both know what they talking about. I have used sbc online support when i was with them and they great and knowledgeable
edit:when i was with sbc i never had spam problem, was not using any software to block it. |

| said by ylen131 :edit:when i was with sbc i never had spam problem, was not using any software to block it. SBC is a spam magnet, as is any other large ISP domain. Spammers know the approximate number of SBC customers, and will use dictionary attack, as well as harvest 'bots, to find email addresses. It is a grave error to attribute your receipt of spam to your ISP.
SBC is more responsible for spam through port 25 outbound of their customer's infected computers than through some kind of cozy deal selling email addresses. For that reason, SBC has implemented blocking of outbound port 25. They also, at this time, block inbound on ports 135, 139, 445 and 1025.
If you are getting spammed at your DSLX email address, you need to look at all the other ways for spammers to get hold of your email address; including friends of friends whose email addresses are included with yours in those interminable Cc: lists of those goofy AOL nested forwards. Spam to an email address has more to do with how the user of that email address uses it than with what the ISP does with it. |

I am a little confused with this topic, someone please clarify.
People who signed up with the 19.95 annual contract will be switched to the 14.95 rate if their account wasn't activated before the new pricing?
The new pricing was listed on June 1, 2005. My account was activated on June 2, 2005 (June 3 if you consider after midnight). Don't I qualify for the new rate? If so, is it automatic or do I need to e-mail someone?
Thank you. |

1 edit | Dtierman,
My questions have been answered by George. Most of us were just wondering aloud, why there are many people over on the SBC forum bragging how they were re-rated to the lower price, while we couldn't. It appears that SBC have DSL Extreme under stringent rules, that they themselves don't have to follow. We don't think it's fair competition, but what can we do?

BS Most of the braggarts actually lied to get their re-rate. After investigating, I decided I couldn't do it honestly. The re-rate is given to customers who call SBC's retention department and claim that they are going to bail to another service. The only services I have to consider are Comcast and DSLX. I doubt that SBC retention would believe that DSLX offers a better deal; and, in all honesty, the only part of Comcast that is better is the speed. Since my current speed is adequate, and the Comcast price jumps to $56.95 per month after six months, I can't seriously claim that Comcast would win me over.
IMHO, SBC and their lying customers deserve each other. -- Norman ~A deam, dream, no dream ~Voices of the night go across the forest ~A dream, dream, no dream ~Good night my good child |

| reply to blacksurfer Yes, nice find! If SBC is making DSLX play by certain rules, they should have to as well.
This also means new custmers will be paying DSLExtreme $3.45/month ($41.40 per year) so DSLX can transport their data, keep a 24 hour support staff, pay a SuperNews, and run email and web servers. Doesn't DSLX also have to pay SBC their setup fee?
Is it just me or does this seem like dot bomb accounting?
Judging from their pricing, it seems like they expect static IP customers to subsidize these cheap circuits.
