| reply to gracie said by gracie : they offered me mcafee instead; had to drink water to stop the hiccups from the laughing... Now, that's just mean. Don't you love using your favourite ActiveX enabled browser to install/check for software updates and definitions? With super duper security check requiring username and password so you know none of your family, friends or enemies can update it unless you do so. Every cool person knows it's the only way to go. And it uses McAfee's InstantUpdate patented technology, so you can rest assured you get nothing but the best. Need to see what's going on? Just fire up Security Center. It cames in various colours - red one year, blue the next. Symantec does not offer that. Also, rumour has it 2006 will support email scanning, Windows Explorer integration, and Microsoft Outlook integration. Of course, there is so much more, like constant reminders you can buy other services as well.
Shame you refused such a great offer. |

as for the trial, i agree, except they are giving me a FIFTEEN MONTH free license, and that wasn't something to sneeze at.

Bought a laptop recently, it came with an offer to install NIS for a trial period of either 60 or 90 days. I didn't even bother, even though it was free. I ignored the offer to install and instead put Kaspersky Security Suite on it (anti-virus [possibly the very best], anti-spyware, and firewall as one purchase/license). I then backed up the anti-spyware segment by also installing Microsoft's free Anti-Spyware and a copy of Webroot's SpySweeper.
Why not use the free Symantec package? Because of the nightmare of uninstalling I envisioned 60 or 90 days down the road. Tell Dell, Thanks, but No Thanks - give my copy to some other unsuspecting deserving soul. -- then think again! |

1 edit | reply to gracie You realize, I presume, that this is likely one of those 'trial' versions of NIS that -- if preinstalled -- is going to be the absolute devil to get rid of once the trial period runs out? (I'd pass if I were you.)
You just reminded me, so I went and looked. Sure enough, there's a trial version of NIS 2005 on the system CD that we got with the Gigabyte motherboard for my latest home-brew machine. I was more interested in exactly how the nVidia NForce4 (firmware based firewall on the motherboard's chipset) worked, so I'd forgotten all about the NIS 2005 package. Probably just as well or I'd once again be writing rants about the recent implementations of NIS that Symantec provides. -- Regards, Joseph V. Morris |

| reply to gracie said by gracie :spent most of yesterday dealing with the dell borg---not a pretty sight. Captain Janeway strikes back. A bit off topic, is Dell really that intrusive with preloaded software? I've only used IBM and things included are actually useful, believe it or not. No constant connections online, unless I check for upgrades or something. Although it does load a lot of processes during bootup. Security, trackpoint and a lot of other things - those processes are probably required for software to work. Other than that, no problems whatsoever. |

I'm curious about their comment about the word "illegal" in regard to not preinstalling it. They actually want you to believe the local, state or federal government passed legislation specifically making the removal of Norton products against the law? Wow, this whole 'homeland security' thing is covering issues I'd never considered.
Do they actually mean, 'inconvenient, relative to cooperative marketing and promotional agreements' instead? Dell *has* been cited for saying things that they regret lately. |

I don't know exact username, but you might want try searching for threads which refer to "latest Symantec update" in which you can catch someone from Symantec posting. Maybe he can help you?

| reply to gracie said by gracie :said by antdude :I believe NIS 2005 requires its NAV to be installed it does, but when installing fresh from the cd, i believe you can install either the whole suite, or just the NAV. but my issue is that with the whole suite pre-installed, i want to nuke everything except the NAV, and it's looking like i can't. I am pretty sure NIS 2005 doesn't let you not install its NAV. It has been awhile since I used it though. Easy check. Run Add/Remove Programs list and see if it lets you install/uninstall its NAV from NIS 2005. -- Ant @ The Ant Farm: »antfarm.ma.cx ... Please do not IM/e-mail me for technical support. My customers all have "gold" maintenance and are eligible for upgrades and phone support - the VLA pricing brings it to around $40-45 per client depending on 1 or 2 year renewals. We don't subscribe to the client security(firewall) piece. I can't speak to whether liveupdate works without that support contract. I'd assume liveupdate works or Gracie's NAV CE 8.0 sigs would be sadly out of date! |

Edit - you don't need a WIN server OS or domain to have a parent SAV server - I run one parent on a WINXP PC in a P2P net. I can update AV sigs fine and force scans etc. I just can't push out client installs of new version upgrades (client rollout function). |

| reply to gracie said by gracie :or bat my eyelashes at the symantec guy to let me upgrade my 5-license SAV 8 to 10 . It should be ok. Yes, it's preloaded but Symantec and Dell must have an licensing agreement between them so Dell customers should have proper licence, taking it's OEM version and not trial.
Hmm... maybe you could do the same with Dell guy so you can get NIS CD. I'm sure Symantec guy does not have a chance against you. Just make sure he stops at 5 licences.
Your sig is hilarious. |

| reply to EGeezer said by EGeezer :Last install, I used Dell's recovery disks to delete the partition and load JUST the OS and drivers....SAVCE 10 is out.Works best in a domain environment though. don't forget, this will NOT come with any recovery disks, etc. NO media at all...they are merely replacing the tower. period. with the software installed, but no media. stupid.
just can't afford the upgrade to 10 right now. i'm using version 8 on the machines in client mode, which works fine on a workgroup; i agree for server mode you might want a domain environment. i never could get the "non-scanning" problem that affects about 50 files solved by really unresponsive and unhelpful tech support, which was frustrating, since i kinda (to my surprise, never having been a symantec fan) like SAV. -- graciella!
