| reply to Zodiacal Re: FiOS TV Features Update
said by Zodiacal :i tried adelphia's DVR for a few months. i liked the idea of being able to record two shows and watch another recorded one at the same time, BUT, the quality of the recordings was horable, it looked worse than regular digital cable on my stand alone Tivo. i guess they had to compress the hell out of it to get it to record two shows at once? i switched back to just a standard digital cable box and my tivo. plus the adelphia dvr woudn't let you permantly save shows. it was very anoying. it was a moxi operating system. i will think hard and long before i switch from my tivo, but yet i will have to some day because mine can't do HD. Interesting point. If the Fios TV signal is all-digital (which I believe is the case) then I'm hoping that the DVR will record the digital stream directly, like the DirecTV Tivos do. I'm guessing that the moxi DVR from Adelphia was a hybrid, since Adelphia probably had a lot of their "basic cable" channels still on their analog tier. Anytime a DVR needs to encode an analog signal, like standalone Tivos, then the picture quality will suffer.
How was the recording quality on your "digital" channels? |

| Cablevision has a set-top-box DVR and the recording quality is excellent. They even have a HD version. With it built into the set-top box, like the DirecTivo, I think the quality is much better then trying to integrate a stand-alone unit.
If/when Tivo comes out with a cablecard unit, they might be able to achieve the same quality as the integrated units. -- Tweaked your connection? | Mail Parse | Speed Converter |

| reply to peterl1365 i did notice that some channels looked really horable compaird to others. but my tivo (even tho it has to reencode the data) looks much better than any channel my moxi dvr displayed. im not sure which channels where "digital". i only heard recently that some digital cable companies aren't 100% digital. acctualy i think i heard that on a direct tv commertial? |

1 edit | reply to neutronic The installers here in Keller are using 3 different Motorola boxes. A basic box, a standard def DVR and a hidef DVR. He apparently didn't have one on the truck, or know the model numbers off the top of his head.
I can't remember how he described the HD one, something like "Then there is the kick ass one that will do everything including scratch your ass." |

| reply to NOCMan said by NOCMan :Now only if they would license Tivo to run on top of the MSDVR crap and I'd be happy. Though for the ability to record 6 channels at once I'd jump for it.. Hopefully the dvr has the ability to access NFS or a SAN so people can ramp up recording space beyond it's hard drive limits. Otherwise having the ability to record 6 channels at once for a large family will be moot. LOL. I got a kick out of that one. I keep envisioning homes with a mini data center right in the middle of the house... |

| I am actually looking forward to the MSDVR. UltimateTV (MS DVR for Directv) was great. Mine died and they dont sell it anymore so I had to switch to Tivo. But it really was a great product, it had a bunch of features that I liked better then Tivo. It was FAR better then any cable company DVR I have seen. |

| reply to neutronic »www.microsoft.com/tv/content/Sol···iew.mspx should give you an idea what's coming. See the datasheet link at the bottom for some screenshots. I don't know how much Verizon is customizing things, but if thats the platform they are rolling out, it should be pretty similar. |

Looks like Microsoft has two TV solutions. Oh well, as long as it works is all that matters to me. |

| reply to neutronic OK, here's what I just found out...
I talked to a nice lady on the phone who immediatly went to her supervisor for more info. Right now, the only place the TV Service is being tested in is Virginia, and she said that it was probably accurate information that NJ would begin seeing it pop up in August or September, as stated on this site.
But she also says that unfortunatly, they have a process for selecting test people and this isn't something the average citizen can sign up for. However, People with FIOS already, probably will be contacted first about it.
If anyone else manages to get lucky and finds a local supervisor with more info, feel free to post it .. |

| reply to neutronic Thats funny because I talked to a Verizon encore person 3 days ago she told me they are testing the video service in Keller,Texas which was the first city in the US to get FIOS and she siad that Keller was going to be the first city to get the video service also which should be in the next couple months.
She also went to get her supervisor because she had been to some seminar about the video service but her supervisor was out so she told me to call back the next day and she would have more info on the pricing plans but I was to lazy and busy to call.
The person I talked to was here in the Dallas/Fortworth area. |

| If I remember correctly, at least here in TX, VZ offers DSL & satelite TV in a deal, so maybe he got something similar to that. I highly doubt it was FIOS TV though. If that person could call back up and get some more detail, that would be great.
