1 edit | reply to PONman Re: FiOS TV Features Update
Given the nature of FIOS-TV, I don't see NTSC (analog tv) distribution fitting into their system anywhere.
If Verizon were smart, though, they would offer ATSC or unencryped QAM for all the "basic" channels, which will be supported by many of the upcoming Digital (and current HD) TV's. |

| reply to neutronic Why would they go analog. It's being said that all analog tv distrobution will be shut off in 2009. Even if it isnt, they would want people to go digital. |

The big advantage of analog is it would please the mass of luddites who are reluctant to use an STB on each TV. Remember, Verizon's main aim is to steal customers from cable, and the best way to do that is to make the transition seemless (other than the cost saving). |

Verizon's deployment starts with CableTV standards and adds on to that. It will cost them next to nothing(extra) to carry a bunch of local and base tier channels using good old analog 6Mhz NTSC channels. |

2 edits | reply to neutronic Wooo Hoooo! The front page news on BBR today is the State wide franchise agreement bill passed in Texas.
I might be able to get FIOS TV this fall now!!!
I'm stuck in a little part of Keller that is actually City of Ft. Worth, and until this bill passed, my chances for FIOS TV were pretty crappy. Living in Ft. Worth has screwed me over many times! If you are thinking of moving to Keller, make sure you are in CITY of Keller! (And not in SWB territory either!)
Addendum: Ahh crap... this just passed the senate... still has to go to the house. Uhhg. Plenty of time to kill it again. |

| reply to neutronic Has anyone had Verizon call them up about the TV service yet? I've had someone calling me for the past two d ays looking for either of my parents. I assumed it was a telemearketer, because I had to say hello twice before they picked up, but t his idiot actually called back the second day like they promised they would. Could this be Verizon wanting to sign me up for the tV test service? |

| Yes. I called and was told on the cuff that they are waiting on "State wide franchise agreements" and Other legislation. I was in Best buy yesterday and they had a Verizon Rep standing by the cable modems. While she did not speak to me directly she was explaining to a OOL customer of FIOS and its Video and other potentials. Lee -- I don't feel Tardywww.gwbmcfund.org |

| reply to neutronic Bring on the TV.. I cant find anything locally (grapevine, TX) that states that the franchise is around the corner or that Verizon has applied.. I guess i'll have to start going to the city council meetings. Bring on competition.. I'll keep my fingers crossed that Texas passes the bill.
ETA for grapvine is the Fall the last I heard. |

| reply to Woof Woof Does this cover all states? The way its stated in the article it makes it seem like state wide franchise agreements are allowed in all states, but I in this forum it was stated earlier that it is only for texas. Is this true or is it for all states, because if it is, then Verizon has just jumped a giant hurdle. |

| reply to neutronic It isn't law, yet. I hope the provision about waiting until exisiting franchise agreements expire isn't true. That would mean Verizon has to wait until 2008 in my city. Until that time, they'd have to operate under the same terms as Charter Communications if I'm reading the news article correctly. |

| reply to John1989 Considering it's the Texas legislature, I'm pretty sure that it affects Texas only.
Hopefully, Verizon will be able to leverage this victory into other states. I think legislation like this will be very popular among consumers in every state, most of whom dislike their cable company. |

| I think now that state wide franchising has been done in Texas it will get the ball rolling in other states. It will most likely make it easier to do the same thing in other states now that there is already someone else who has done it. I surely hope it happens in other states, because I'm not sure how well this fiber deployment will turn out without large distribution of video to bring in more money. Verizon will soon need to show ROI (return on investment) otherwise it could mean alot of problems for the companies stock, and company overall. Video services should help them rake in more money per install and help them achieve a better ROI. |

| reply to neutronic We'll see if it gets through the Texas Senate in the next couple of days.
"Unless the Senate agrees with the House changes, a conference committee will have to work out differences between two versions of the bill. But there's little time to do so, because the special session is scheduled to end Wednesday.
Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has said the Senate will not consider any bill that emerges from a conference committee until public school finance is settled."

Well, that's good. I'm all for getting the Verizon deal done, but first things first. School finance is why they're in special session in the first place... |
