| i hope this is the correct forum
Okay, this one might be a little difficult, but I am hoping someone will be able to help me. Let me attempt to explain my situation. I got a old server computer for free and am in the process of trying to put Windows 98 on the hard drive. I managed to create a boot disk and reformat the HD. This is where my trouble begins. My CD drive is not being recognized in DOS so there is no way for me to install the OS. I am not positive what the problem is as the CD drive worked great while in Windows 95 but is not recognized in DOS. The CD drive is a SCSI device and my HD is ATAPI. I downloaded Barts Modboot program and drivers and got it to recognize the CD drive one time and I started the Windows 98 Install program, but the computer rebooted and will not recognize the CD drive again. I tried using Barts Modboot floppy again, but now it says 'Host Adapter at port address 340 failed diagnostics' and 'Host adapter at port address 140 failed diagnostics' then 'ASPI2DOS.sys Installation Failed' and won't go any further. Can anybody help me figure out how I can get Dos to recognize my CD drive? Thanks in advance |

| reply to ChiTang If you have any ATAPI/IDE or any other CD-ROM at your disposal, you could plug it in, install Win 98 and put in the SCSI CD-ROM and apply the drivers for it to OS...
When so many different devices are compiled together exceptions are bound to happen (part of computing) so to save time, you might need to just do what's not the most 'right' thing to do... sometimes it even means disposing of hardware and buying alternative version; cause a $10 device to buy or 10 hours to pointlessly fixing it, learning relatively little in the process... |

| reply to ronster527 thanks for all the replies. sorry it took so long getting back, but my internet was down for awhile. anyway, here is the problem. the HD has already been formated, so i have nothing on the HD. When i got it to correctly work the first time, I started the Windows98 install, made the Windows 98 boot up disk and continued with the install. Somewhere along the line, before copying files, the computer rebooted and the Windows 98 boot up disk started. However, when it got to the CD-Rom drivers it posted an error report and went right to the floppy prompt on dos. I tried to change to my CD drive, but it said the drive could not be accessed. I tried to run Modboot again, but now that won't work. Even though it DID work the first time So, anyway, now I am stuck with nothing on my HD and no way that I can figure out to get to my CD drive. I could throw the ATAPI CD drive that i have on this computer in there, but i don't want to do that unless all other options have been exhausted. I think that the SCSI adapter that I have is an AMD PCI SCSI, at least that is the driver that showed up in Windows 95 when I got the computer. Now I am just stuck. I hope that someone will be able to give me another suggestion. If nothing else works, I will try to use the ATAPI that I have on this computer and pray that it works. |

| I personally think that you're going to be better of in the long run sticking an ATAPI CD drive in that machine.
It sounds like it is either that or find another boot floppy that doesn't error out. You might look here for downloadable boot floppy images: »www.bootdisk.com/ -- then think again! |
