| Bye-bye ATI
Today is a good day:
emerge -C ati-drivers ati-drivers-extra emerge nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx No more random crashes (XFS + ATI binary drivers = heavy, heavy worries.)
No more sucky (1/3 of Windows!) performance.
Hello Doom3 and stable, performant World of Warcraft under WINE (not cedega.)
Never again.

| After using ATI's linux drivers, using nvidia will be a walk in the park. It's really sad that ati doesn't have better linux support. |

| reply to Eatmeingreek Now, now, children -
ati has been the source of a deep moral awakening -
Most of us who use the drivers spend so many nights just trying to get 3d that we no longer engage in other activities unpleasing to the puritanical majority.
Indeed, the mere ability to collect e-mail in x with 9600 card surely prevents much immoral activity, provides solid birth-control without offending the pope, and has the economic side benefit of supporting cannabis growers worldwide.
Seriously, EMIG, congratulations - those of us whom you have so generously helped over the years are grateful to you, and happy for you.
Best, M -- "...children and young people feel instinctively the difference between those who genuinely wish them well and those who regard them merely as raw material for some scheme." --Russell |

| reply to Eatmeingreek I wish ATI would wake up with their drivers. It was a pain to get them working, however they aren't as good as nVidia drivers. I have a GeForce 2 GTS (32 MB) in a box with an AMD Athlon 700 (Slot A) and 256MB RAM running SuSE 9.1 and it gets more FPS than my Radeon 9600 XT (128 MB) with an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ and 512 MB RAM running SuSE 9.3.
I haven't had this ATI card that long but I'm really disappointed with the lack of good drivers for Linux. |

| Doubtful. Even ATI's Windows drivers suck ass, along with their actual hardware. I've never had a single ATI card that's lasted longer than a year and a half, two years tops. After having about three or four of them die on me within 18 months, I dumped every single ATI card I had for nVidia. |

| reply to Epyon9283 Well, I got the new drivers from SuSE. The glxgears gives more FPS than I got previously. I get approximately 3300 FPS when running it. I think I should be seeing more. Does anyone else have a figure for the FPS of a similar ATI card? My card is the 9600xt. |

| reply to Eatmeingreek I do have my Radeon 9600 Pro working on my MAME rig, but I'm looking to dismantle it and put it together with my wife's, and make another computer to give to her little brother. It has a geForce 2 GTS.

join:2000-08-25 South Amboy, NJ | Well, running with medium settings at 1280x1024 I get about 30-50 FPS in the Doom 3 demo. I think I should be getting more, but it might be that my card doesn't have enough power for that. |

| reply to ftzsee said by ftzsee :I'm curious about this part. Why? You mean why WINE and not Cedega? Because Cedega costs money. I already paid for two licenses for the game. And I'm paying from two monthly subscriptions. Cedega would be too much.
Besides I track HEAD on WINE, and some recent changes took care of most of the sound glitches. -- "PowerPoint is a distraction. People use it when they don't know what to say." |

| reply to Eatmeingreek Uncle! I give! I am swapping my horrid 7000VE (not even supported by the ATI driver and cranking a whopping 250 FPS in glxgears (that's bad, btw), dri mode crashes with xorg 6.8.2, I hate this card) for a low end Nvidia Quatro4 200 that's gathering dust anyway.
Anyone want to bet it will be faster?
I've already sshed into my box from work and installed the nvidia drivers, just have to wait until this evening to swap boards and stomp the ATI card into dust.
Hates it, we do. |
