Your Opinion on SpywareGuard

I've been using SpywareBlaster (which is a great product), so I thought I would try out SpywareGuard, but I have a few concerns:

1) I know that SpywareGuard uses heuristics to identify spyware, but the latest definitions date for it is 1/22/04. That just seems a little too outdated to me.

2) Is anyone else currently using this program (or tried it in the past) and has any comments on its effectiveness for what it is designed to do.

I use SpywareGaurd(and a few others) on both of my machines.

While other apps have similar protections, I still see SG popup a warning from time to time(that tells me it's still effective). I like having it there in my mix of anti-crapware arsenal.

run it myself and it has cut down on the spyware. I also had concerns over it's updating but I make sure my other proggies stay up to date.

A comparison of anti-spyware applications versus Hotbar was done here: »www.dozleng.com/updates/index.ph···pic=5275 and SpywareGuard did it's job and prevented it from being installed. It's not perfect without current updates but it is one more layer in the layered approach.

I used Spywareguard and really liked it. However, I've found that the Teatimer in Spybot combined with MS Antispyware nearly seals my computer from any spyware (I do use Spywareblaster as well). I haven't had spyware in literally months with these combinations.

Like what everyone else stated, I also use SG in lieu with other programs.

I used to have it and really liked it. But for some reason when I got my Verizon software installed suddenly the spyware guard started going nuts because of course the Verizon changed my homepage which was ok with me and I told it to allow that but it would not let it happen kept popping up like mad and then my CPU usage went to 100% and would stay there as long as I had the spywareguard on. I tried removing the program totally and doing a reinstall but it did the exact same thing 100% CPU so I can no longer run it had to delete it.

I do have spywareblaster and it is fine.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I guess I'll throw one more question out there...Have you run into any problems with SG running along side other anti-spyware apps for example, Spybot or MSAS? I'm just wondering if the real time protection provided by two different programs causes any problems or conflicts.

BTW: that's a great link mers2. Considering how recent the tests were done, I'm convinced SG is still doing its job.

I've never had a problem with SG with Spybot or Counterspy when either has been running resident protection. SG has always seemed to play nice with other security programs. Javacool does good work.

SpywareGuard is not supposed to be updated, due to its hueristic scanning engine, read this thread from Javacool which explains why:

EDIT: BTW, I have used it on 3 different boxes, one Win 98, , 2 XPs, one home, one Pro, I never hear anything unless I make changes myself(Pro box is test box, its only barked once)Its a great lil app.

Not completely true. SpywareGuard used to get regular updates. I just did a cursory search and couldn't find it, but in addition to the Wilders post Javacool did state in another post somewhere that SG is at a point where it needs a total rebuild to do any additional updates. Yes, it is still a good product and still offers protection but it does need updating.

Right now I'm using MS Anti-Spyware in conjunction with SpywareGuard. From what I've seen so far, they should compliment each other pretty well.

Thanks. I thought I read somewhere that Javacool is making a new version of spywareguard. Can anyone confirm that?
