 [Streamyx] Slow 1Mbps connection

Hi All,

I really appreciate if anybody can help me. I have been a very happy 512k user for one plus year. 50kB+ http download and BT were never a problem.

With the pleasant experience, i decided to upgrade to 1.0M package. Not so lucky this time, after all the tweaking i can think of i manage only to get 65kB avg download max. I did try to experiment with various RWIN, change the adsl mode still doesn't.

Then i called 1-300 number, suprisingly, they responded quite fast. A tech came to my house the very next day and tried changing my port at the exchange put up a new wires to my phone line still doesn't improve.

Does anybody encounter similar problem and manage to get it fix, i appreciate if u can share. Is there anything else i should before asking tmnuts to downgrade my line to 512k.

I am noticing slowdowns too but was thinking this is due to my other server's net being congested. I get flux fr 88KB/sec to 108KB/sec if I travel single job. This observation is 'lower lows but higher highs', so I'm not sure yet. Two simul jobs to one 'exceedingly fast' server still delivers constant 100+KB/sec tho. I'm currently drawing 4 simul jobs fr a congested server and is getting only 3.6GB/day (vs 4GB/day). My conclusion is still up in the air, but hope these info helps. Kap Tong area.

XEQ.

I'm also from Puchong. Having slow download speed suddenly from last Sunday night (12 Jun 2005) onwards.

Now when using BT, I only have 50K or lower, even if I got 218.111.* IP range. Starting 2 or 3 jobs still yields the same download speed. Previously I can get 90K+ with only 1 or 2 jobs. Also, I notice that it's now quite hard to get remote connection with other peers. Especially with these IP range: 24.*, 6*.*, 7*.*, 8*.*. But IP range from 210.*, 218.*, 22*.* are ok. BT speed is even worst when I get 219.95.* IP range. Wonder what TNNet done with all those upgrading jobs...

HTTP download is also affected when connected to 218.111.* IP range. I got unstable speed from 30K-90K even when downloading from Microsoft HTTP server. Previously I can get 100K+ from Microsoft HTTP server, and 50K+ from some other server.

I've been getting real slow download using BT ever since I've updated my Azureus to version 2.3.0.2. I'm not sure it's because of tmnet or the Azureus... Changing of the default port of 6881-6889 to other ports also didn't help.
But normal files downloading seems to be ok..

yinsw,

R u on 1 M package?

try to use other port than the BT default port ie 6881-6889. I'm not sure why, using this port BT download is much slower.

speeds in PJ area seem fine but surfing to certain sites doesnt work due to their dumb-assed-proxy setup. even without loosing connection the out-of-reach sites vary. for the moment i can not for the love of god get google ads to show up at all (i.e. pages with google ads dont show). also i can not reach google.co.uk (google.com, google.com.my and google.de work though). my guess is tm.net needs to go back to the drawing board for their proxy-setup, they just cant get it right.

Made a typo in above post. 3.6GB/12hrs, NOT /day. Sorry.

Some more updates:
4 simul tasks to 'congested' server = 92-103KB/sec, av 98KB/sec.
Driving 6 simul tasks to same server = 100KB/sec sec av. Slightly below 4GB/12hrs (was 9GB/day prev).

This one throughout yesterday until now. Conclusion: speed is now back to just before their nation-wide rollout.

Wondering if they're adding even more 1Mbps users or their tinkering messed up something...

nope.. I'm on 512/256 package.. the speed usually don't over 20kb/sec now.. It used to get up to 50kb/sec total.. I'm using port16881-16889.. so it's not the default bittorrent port..

Sorry, i misread your post. I have stopped using azureus because it freezes all the time. I suggest try bitcomet i get more consistent download.

Just found out something... it seems that TMnet is doing some speed capping on the Streamyx accounts. I tried logging in with some friend's account on 512kbps package, the speed was somehow limited at 500kbps++. My modem is sync'ed at 1024kbps downstream. Then I tried with those accounts who are subscribed to 1mbps package and the speed will go all the way up to 900kbps++. There are also some 1mbps package which have the speed limited to 500kbps++ and vice versa. So what is really going on in TMnet ? Now I remember all this happened after the 12th June maintenance works at alot of places. Ever since that day, my speed has been half of 1mbps..

Thanx for this info kiokyau See Profile. New development, maybe?

Perhaps this is the way TMNet shd go, everyone sync at max rate, your login account will determine yr actual rate. Removes one layer of 'control', smoothening provision of new Streamyx everywhere. But then, we're implying most Msians are really v 'honest' with themselves. Only time will tell if we Msians will force TMNet to 'do it the old way'...

BTW, if your're on 1Mbps, have you gone and complain?

Yeap, but before that, just want to find out more if they really did implement a new system to limit the speed on the account side.

friends,

some news here. the technician that came to me house the other day admitted that he tested my port at the exchange and he's not getting even close 1MB after all!!! looks like it's not my line that have problem. for those getting half the speed i suggest go and harrass tmnet 9515 no. until they do something about. only then they know the problem is real. i keep getting excuses that the copper to my house is as a reason i'm getting only 550kbps speed. cheers

I've been getting around 900kbps++ ever since the day they start having that package. Then after the scheduled maintenance earlier this month, then the speed also drop to what mryoda is getting... around 500kbps++ only even though the modem is sync'ed at 1024kbps... should be they have start limiting the speeds by account at the BRAS.. but why limit those on the 1mbps package to 500kbps++ ?

spoke to a telekom guy today. apparently the problem is due to KL (brickfield?) exchange. they are re-routing the trffic to cyberjaya which has larger pipe. might take a week or two.
