[Line Problem] After the Storm and "Fix"

RE: »[Line Problem] Storm Damage?

I'm ready to cry but I still have a little optimism. SBC just left and now I worry the line that was awesome for 11 months is no more - it may have been the LAST decent line available but was damaged in the storm.

The line I refer is the aerial line from a box 1/2 mile away to my pole. The "best could be found" just plain sucks.

I'll still be working with the pros but you can't fight physics.

Before the storm. Typical downstream readings for the last 11 months:
Downstream Sync Rate: 3008k
Downstream Noise Margin: 12.5db
Downstream Attenuation: 53.5db

After the storm. Why I'm ready to cry:
Downstream Sync Rate: 480k
Downstream Noise Margin: 16.0db
Downstream Attenuation: 62.5db
...but POTS is audibly clean.

Anyone have a hanky?

FLASH!... maybe a measurement anomaly???

WOW! Just got a resync and I'm at 2016 Interleave (safe mode)...

(I did post in CovadDirect... bless you boys!)

AND 15.5db DOWNSTREAM NOISE MARGIN!!!

I don't know why 480k saw only 16db but I 'taint gonna argue!!!

Attenuation is still at 62.5db but still, this is REAL encouraging!

EDIT: So what comes by? A thunderstorm. Gawd we're gettin' 'em!!! Well, I survived running outside to get my hedge trimmer and line cord in from the downpoor...

Not as bad as first thought...

I thought the numbers showed I was cursed below 1M but for some strange reason the noise isn't as bad at high sync rate as I would have guessed...

Downstream Sync Rate: 2016k
Downstream Noise Margin: 15.5db
Downstream Attenuation: 62.5db

I wonder if I was in G-Lite mode or something at 480k? My logging doesn't include the mode, darn it. Any thoughts? 480k/16db then 2016/15db makes no sense unless something else was changed.

Hi Bill,
That 2016 is "Safe Mode", right? Are you going to try for "Fast Path", or are you just grateful that you have reasonable performance?
How do you do on a Speed test?

Oh, Yeah........, Congrats on getting some speed back!

These opinions are strictly my own. However, if you really want them, we can negotiate.

New Line at 480k

Same Line at 2016k
Hi DB. Yes, that's interleave so probably all the fixin's of "safe mode". Safe mode also consists of some other config differences. I'm still wondering how 480k can have 16db margin yet 2016k have 15db but I'm not complaining.

EDIT: Well, it wasn't in G-Lite mode so that low noise margin remains a mystery. Attached is the page still up on my notebook PC from immediately after the line change. Shouldn't 480k give me 30db or so?

EDIT2: Aha! Look at the downstream transmit power, it makes up for it almost exactly. Interpretation just got more complex.

Just got the word from Raybro in »/forum/covaddirect
It looks like I'll be in safe mode for awhile. I don't hold 3008k any more.
For reference, he says my noise dropped to 6db.

SYNC: 2016/384 Interleave
I'm watching the Vikings on History Channel and the name "William The B*st*rd" was just mentioned. Hmmm... LOL!... not!

I'm glad I thought I'd be at 928k for awhile, because, achieving 2016k lifted my spirits. So I'm happy for now. With no urgency I'll be inquiring here and there.

Here's my best speed test.
