| New motherboard and cpu
So i'm trying to decide here which system is better..
EPoX EP-9NPA socket 939 or the Abit AN8 stocket 939 or
DFI Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4
With a Amd Athlon 64 3000+
and I take it my 350W power supply wont be good enough anymore. -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

If you are simply replacing your cpu and mb I don't think I wouldn't expect a problem. If you are doing a larger upgrade much will depend on the quality of the ps and how much additional stuff/added drives etc. you plan on. |

| reply to Subaru Maybe I will hold off on a Amd 64 system and just go with the Xp system as it's Cheaper, and Until I see more programs that make use of 64bit.
Having said that.. trying to decide if I should get a Xp 3000+ or 2800+ -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

I didn't edit this properly I meant I think you will be fine under those circumstances. Should read "If you are simply replacing your cpu and mb I wouldn't expect a problem." |

| reply to Subaru I wouldn't invest in an essentially dead CPU setup. Go A64 Socket 939.
Get a modest but good power supply. Keep in mind that you will want a supply that supports Serial ATA, PCI-Express, and even SLI if the motherboard you choose use those things. A top quality 350W supply *can* support a moderate system, but you are running 4 hard drives, lots of fans and two optical drives. You already should get a new supply, unless your current supply is made by PC Power & Cooling, in which case it is under rated and should be fine.
Some online calculators tend to overstate how much wattage must be supported, but you want a supply that can support at least 17 Amps on the +12V rail, much has been posted here about supplies, do a search on the topic. I suspect that whatever you do, you want a new supply, so you might as well save some lunch money for a few extra weeks and just go with a socket 939 system!
Use Hard OCP and Anandtech's review round up of power supplies to choose one.

If you read those two sites and read what has been posted here you will be able to find a great supply for not too much money. Look at getting at least 400W with 18Amps or more on the +12v idealy. Try for some of the stuff that I have posted about in other threads here.
There is a far cry of difference between an XP (chips are at end of production) and A64, which is at its' mid life and holds a good future promise. Get an A64 S939 3000 and a PCI-E motherboard with an entry level video card to start yourself off. That will be blazing fast for you. And it will OC well too.
nForce4 is the chipset to get, but even a VIA is ok, only the K8T890 chipset won't run the AMD 64 X2 CPUs. so word is. -- Bush: Don't love him, don't hate 'em, just a typical president. | reply to Subaru I use to like epox.. but out of those I dont like any anymore
I will always like MSI and gigabyte. MSI's are the most reliable boards I have ever owned, might not be the best for overclocking, but they are VERY reliable IMO. And they usually have the most features. -- foamy |

That's quite of bit of additional stuff. If you get odd errors you might need to look into a new ps. Can't be sure until you try though. Also I would stick to the 90nm cpu cores, something like the venice core, which draws considerably less power. |
