The wpad.launchmodem.com is most likely the launchmodem used to access the modems configuration screen. In place of entering 192.168.1.254 (default Ip) into the browser, you can just type launchmodem and it will bring up the configuration screen for the modem. Also I think anytime you enter the default IP to access the modem it may show up in the log as launchmodem.

I entered the new DNS servers into the NIC config, and I've been running OK for 4 days now...
