@lsanca.dsl-w.verizon

westell versalink 327w disconnect issues.

hi guys
i've read through the posts that seem to relate to my problem, but there is a difference that I could not find elsewhere, so i decided to make a new post.

i have verizon, westell 327w gateway. it is connected to two computers. usually the internet works just fine, but when I use certain programs it seems to disconnect, showing the popup on the system tray "network cable unplugged", After waiting about 1 or 2 minutes it goes back on. the programs that seem to trigger this is going onto battle.net with warcraft 3 and joining a game, and using the azureus bit torrent client. i have port forwarding on for both programs (6112 and 6881).

Everything was working fine a few days ago, and I had every configuration kept the same, including the port forwarding. What I am wondering is why certain programs are triggering this disconnect and if there was a way to figure out if it was on my end or verizon's before i call them. i've had problems before with them when it was their problem and they kept claiming it was on my end, so i'd like some concrete data to prove it isnt the comp, since it shouldn't be as i haven't changed any network configurations.

Unlike the other posts, I do not get frequent disconnects. It only starts timing out after i run warcraft 3 online or azureus. could it be something with too many connections?
please tell me your suggestions
thanks in advance

Check the bottom of the device and let us know if it is assembled in USA or China and what Rev it is. Some earlier models were known to be real dogs.

That's the known dog, I had one and was sent a replacement, which was a Rev C, made in USA with a manufacture date of 2/2005. It works perfectly. Call tech support and tell them you want a replacement sent.

forgive me for beating a dead horse if this has already been rehashed.. but..

I have a Versalink 327w through verizon, and I notice that randomly it seems to drop the internet connection for 1 mniute at a time. What really stinks (besides it dropping the internet connection) is that if I'm using a citrix/vpn application, it resets the whole thing and I lose all my work.

I have Rev E, model A90-327w-15-06. Is this a stinker?
if it is, how do I go about convising verizon to send me a new one? Every time I call they treat me like a child. "How many lights are on?" Ok, now turn it off and turn it back on."

One other question -- this is driving me crazy. I lost the # for verizon DSL help, and of course you can't find it anywhere on their website. After navagating through 9 million links I got to the "online support chat" section. Of course, I was in Firefox, and that uses ActiveX, so I had to navigate all the way back with IE. I installed it according to the directions, and it came to the "Collecting configuration information" and just sat there for 30 minutes looking stupid.

Has anyone had success with this? I think verizon tries to save money by not being helpful at all and hoping that poeple like me give up and buy a better/working DSL/wireless router.

Can someone please please please give me their 800 help #? I threw away the inital piece of paper with it on it, figure I wouldn't need it anymore. how wrong I was.

thanks.

ok, am I crazy?

Call #2 to verizon tonight after my dsl modem dropped 3 times in 30 minutes. Each time I watched the router -- the DSL light would start blinking and the internet light would go dark. This would last for about 1-2 minutes, and then the DSL light would come back on full green and the internet light would come back on either as red or start blinking until the internet light comes on full green again. Again, I can't do anything until the internet light comes on.

I check the DSL logs in the router, and it perfectly mirrors every time DSL loses connection and says so.

I call Verizon online help, and the clueless person said there's nothing he can do to help me unless we can catch it actually not connected. All that's going to do is show a dead connection, and they'll send out some yahoos to look at the line, who will say all is ok.

Needless to say, the dsl doesn't go dead during this time.

He says there's nothing he can do to help me, and then I bring up the fact that this is a known bad versalink 327w modem, and he says I have to call the equipment people during normal business hours.

Am I crazy? Has anyone dealt with these "Equpiment" people? You would figure that the "equpiment" people could talk to the help desk people. ARRRGH!

I want to make sure I'm experiencing what everyone else with the stinking 327w has experienced and it's not just me before I go crazy. If I shell out $50 for a linksys wireless/DSL/router, will my problems go away? I'd be $50 poorer, but i'd also not have to bang my head in the wall.

The equpiment people's #, by the way, is 800-567-6789.

Call in and say 'cancel' at the voice prompt, when someone from 'retention' comes on, firmly tell them your Versalink is defective and you want it exchanged.

I've been having dropped-connection problems with my Westell Versalink 327W for some time now, but it's gotten really bad in the last few weeks.

I just got off the phone with Verizon Tech Support, and the tech admitted that (a) the 327W's have some known problems, including weak wireless signal strength and dropped connections, (b) Verizon hasn't been shipping these boxes to customers "for a few weeks now at least," although (c) if I requested a replacement for my defective 327W and they had any left in stock, guess what I would be getting...

In order to get a non-Westell replacement box, I am going to have to deal with Verizon Billing on Monday.

The extended version of this post, complete with somewhat intemperate language, is at my blog, here:

I have a westell versalink 327w that’s causing disconnect issues. A month ago it was infrequent disconnects but now its happening about every 15 min. I can watch the modem lights cycle through a reset cycle when it happens. And when I do get a connection it is at a low speed up/down link. I still don't know if it really is the modem or something on Verizon's end. At the same time we are experiencing phone line quality issues, dropped calls, static, back ground noise, radio station music, cross talk, and even no service for days. You name it I got it. So I got Verizon coming out for the 5th time in 3 weeks to look into that issue again. And I was able to prove that part of the static was actually caused by the modem and with all the other issues I have with the DSL side, Verizon issued an RMA to me and they are sending out a new DSL modem since its still under warrantee. Verizon was nice enough to credit me generously, after I asked, because so far phone and DSL have been pretty much unusable and it’s getting frustrating. I fell your pain….

@lsanca.dsl-w.verizon

just to give you guys a little update

i called verizon and got to tech support where they started treating me like a little kid, and i just started talking about the modem with REV numbers and such, and said it was defective and they transfered me to billing, where i basically ran through the drill again (but talking quickly...their support sucks and i didn't want to explain it all to them) and they agreed to send me a "replacement" asap. i asked if they could make sure i wasn't getting the same "made in china rev e" modem, but the csr said there was no way to tell.

coincidentally, my disconnect issues disappeared. everything just started working fine. i got the modem yesterday, and it was the same one that i had. but now i haven't been having any problems...so i'm starting to think it is something on their end or on my physical phone line that needed repair i didn't know took place. it wasn't my computer though, since all configurations are kept the same. Unless it could be that the modem spontaneously becomes a troublemaker? not sure.

so right now i just swapped the modem just for the heck of it.

just a tip, if their support seems to go with the basics, it is expected since many times people who aren't very savvy in technical stuff call in and their problem could be solved by a power cycle or something. but if you know theres something more, i just outright go and tell them, and they take me a bit more seriously, expecially when i'm talking about tests and things their own tech ppl dont understand...

hope my problems dont come back, and to everyone who still has the same problem, keep complaining to verizon...they'll eventually fix it and most likely credit you.

@verizon.net

I've had the same problems everyone describes. I just got off the phone with Verizon- The tech support guys read through some standard manual to help you- "Turn off your modem.." blah blah blah - after several shutdown procedures, I got fed up and told him it wasn't my computer's config and started telling him why I know it's the modem or connection. He didn't quite understand me. Perhaps it was too technical for him or he didnt have a response in his help guide to answer me. Anyways, they are sending me another modem. I think they key to getting a replacement is to keep telling them their solution doesnt work. Don't say "other people have the same problems." They wont do anything on the basis of other people's problems- only yours. The one that is "defective" is made in the USA. Doesn't seem to matter where they are made, all Westell modems SUCK ass. either that or DSL has some inherent line issues.

Finally I see I am not alone.

After 4 DSL modem replacements, the knowledgeable network technician - who knew he was knowledgeable - claimed he had concluded it's my power problem, and that I should call my utility company and have them check out the wires in my house. The fact that it only happened for 12V did not mean anything to him, and that there are 3 possibilities for the power failure: the voltage, the amperage, and the om, the last one could "fry".

After reading all these postings, I think I should fry him.

Ok, so here's the preliminary report.

I took the above suggestion and called verizon this past saturday, threatening to cancel unless I got a new modem. The guy on the other end had to check with his supervisor, and voila, now I'm sitting at home with a new Versalink 327w. To tell you how bad it is, they don't even want the old modem back.

In any way, this new one has a different model number (B90 instead of A90) and a different rev. letter of D.

So far in the 15 hours it has been hooked up, no connection drops are logged in the dsl router log. Even better, this one supports WPA along with WEP.

Keep your fingers, toes, eyeballs, etc. crossed that nothing happens...

thanks guys for all of your help.

That would be a rev assembled in the US -- WPA (stronger enryption) isn't available in the revs from China.

Like Rick, I just received a replacement Versalink 327W from Verizon; same rev and model number he got, manufacture date of 6/2005.

I'll be stress-testing it this weekend, but so far, so good. (And I, too, was delighted to see the WPA support, which I immediately switched over to.)
