| What Heatsin/Fan For 939 socket 3500+?
hey there. I noticed my CPU will top out at 50 degrees lately whenever I really really push it hard (from burn-in tests or heavy gaming).
For the best bang for my buck, what is the best heatsink/fan combo I should get? Right now I am sitting on stock cooling so I am sure anything will be better than what I have already. I have Antec Formula 5 as my thermal compound as well. Thanks for any help! |

| GameGuy, the best Heatsink made right now is the thermalright XP-120. It doesn't fit on all motherboards, so you have to check the motherboard compatibility list on the site:
and NewEgg has it:
What is great about it is that it uses a 120mm fan, and such fans are easier on the human ear, they seem more quiet, move a lot more air, and can be run at a lower speed still moving good air.
Every online test that I have seen put the XP-120 way ahead of any other heatsink, and, what's more, it is light, so it won't damage your motherboard.
The second best is the XP-90c. The XP-90C is all copper, which makes it come in second, because it is a smaller heatink, it needs to be. It also uses the famous Thermalright heatpipe technology that helps get that heat far away from the CPU fast.
Both the XP models don't come with fans, you have to choose them separately, but that is a good thing: You can get a better fan that way, more quiet and to your specific expectations. Members here can recommend a fan to you after you have made a choice.
The third best Heatsinks would be either the XP-90(aluminum & copper) or the Zalman CNPS7000B-CU
»www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···35109119
»www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···35118119
The Fourth best is that Zalman model in the Copper + Aluminum model:
Any of the above will provide an improvement over your stock Heatsink, *but*, the improvement will be in moderate increments if you choose one of the latter choices. Really try and get either the XP-120, if it fits, or the XP-90c for real improvement.
NOW, a word about thermal compound:
You need to **strongly** consider changing the compound you are using, *and* perhaps study up on how to properly apply it.
Arctic Silver Ceramique has tested to be the very best that there is, especially after a 3 day settling period. It improves during a computer's full loading condition. *Seriously* consider changing your compound to it.
Go to »www.arcticsilver.com for instructions on how to apply thermal compound:
The second best compound is Shin-Etsu Microsi, it comes in a somewhat close second, accodring to a recent test done under controlled lab conditions:
It is a thicker compound, and is good in it's own way for certain applications
Third best is Arctic Silver #5, it is also a very good compound, most people here use it, but ceramique was recently tested to be the best that there is on a current SLI based computer.
Make CERTAIN THAT YOU USE proper methods for removal of your current thermal compound BEFORE applying the new stuff. Arctic Silver makes a new product for those that don't want to use acetone and pure isopropyl alcohol:
Once again, FOLLOW the instructions on the AS website for that product!
Rule #1: NEVER touch with your bare hand, fingers, etc. the surfaces of the heatsink or CPU where they contact, there are nasty oils in your skin that ruins the effectiveness of cooling compounds.
Rule #2: Always follow the instructions to the letter for the install of thermal compound.
Rule #3: Take your time and do it right.

| reply to signmeuptoo OK I decided on the XP-120. I found a link here »www.xoxide.com/thermalright-xp-1···ler.html and have the choice of 2 fans, one hy Thermaltake and one by Sunon. Is there any recommendation?
Also, does the one from newegg come with the 120mm fan or do I have to order that seperately? Thanks! |

| reply to GameGuy369 This is a very hard to find fan, I bought it for my XP-120 what I get it, it is nice, not the most very quietest, but still nice:
»svc.com/uc-12fab-b.html
It is sold all over Europe, but more and more American dealers you can't get it, so it is rare. The blades are clear so it will show off the XP-120 nice and it has a gold colored plated grill. It also has a built in resistor fan speed control, so you can reduce the fan speed to where it is right for you.
If not, some of the Sunon are nice, but the Vantec Stealth fans are quiet (but they don't move too much air, sort of moderate there). Panaflos are good fans too, but almost none of them are made so the the speed sensing wire is working, Panasonic disables that for some reason.
I suggest an adjustable fan, so that you can reduce the speed to your noise tolerance while still moving good air.
My fan moves plenty of air, I have it blowing on my now. -- Have YOU hugged your guinnea pig today? If you want tach readings from Panaflos, you would need to purchase their BX versions (ie, M1a-BX) which are available.
Anything from the aforementioned manufacturer, Evercool, would be good for your CPU cooling. If you want to do a bit of research, Sanyo Denki's or San Ace's are just as good as well. -- "He who hits head on wall, probably deserved it." |

| reply to GameGuy369 I have the Zalman 7700-Cu heatsink and that baby rocks. My idle temperature is in the low 30 degrees Celsius range. On full load it peaked at 41 degrees Celsius with the case closed. When it's open it doesn't even top out at 40 degrees Celsius.
