| [Other] Verizon Voicewing vs Vonage
Currently have Verizon DSL and phone service, looking into getting either Vonage or Voice Wing VOIP, Voice Wing is $5 more for the same service and features, i can reduce my Verizon phone service to Dial tone for $10.00 and keep the DSL going, now my question is...is the $5.00 savings worth the hassle, overall i would save about $25-$30 a month by switching to VOIP, i heard Vonage customer service is nothing to cheer about, would like to get some input, thanks. |

| Their customer service can be a pain, but more often than not I just realize I will be on there for a while and bear it...
That being said, I am a happy vonage customer who has had it for a year, and had dual lines for over 6 months...
Before warned, before other members here jump on really quick and say so, the linksys adapter you get will be used specifically for Vonage, and is locked so you can't bring it to other providers, which for me is a so what...
If you have good upload speed and low latency, I say go for it.... |

Are you using the VersaLink 327W? If so, just enable QoS under Advanced WAN configuration. All the voice packets will automatically be put into the Express Forwarding queue. Normal traffic gets classified into the Best Effort queue.
In any event, 768 is excellent for VoIP. A single G.711 call only uses 90k. |

| reply to kg Another point is that if you're on Verizon, we expect them to offer "Naked DSL" (DSL without requiring you to have their dialtone) in the next few months. That way you can reduce your bill even more, regardless of which VOIP service you use.
At my second home, I have the Verizon 6000/768 service that came with the free Westell wireless modem/router and use Voicepulse, Broadvoice and Vonage. All work flawlessly over it. The router's QOS works pretty well with that much bandwidth available.
As to customer service, I'm not going to cheer about how wonderful Verizon is either so I'd pick the one that works best for you and saves the most money. |

| reply to kg There are plenty of other VOIP providers other than Vonage to consider against Verizon's outsourced VoiceWing service. Though the Vonage service is very good, you're right that you will be a small fish in a big pond. Some of the other smaller providers do an excellent job with customer service and support, with no degradation of quality and no downtime! |

I asked the cs rep about naked DSL and she had no idea what i was talking about, she told me i could get dialtone service only which would be $10.00 plus $6.50 in taxes, so when you add things up it's about $46.50 for the DT line and DSL, i'm paying about $80 now for phone and DSL. Then when you add the Vonage it's about $62.50...maybe it's worth it. |
