Richmond, VA. FIOS

After placing a formal complain the my State Corporation Commission I received a very vague call from a Verizon FIOS rep. She clearly stated that the deployment schedule is propriotary to Verizon and would only admit that cable was indeed being laid in "seleted" areas of Richmond with deployment dates under tight wraps by the company. I am certain these deployments will only be in the more affluent suburbs such as Chesterfield and Henrico counties surrounding the city with greater purchasing power supplied by employment in the city itself. Those of us who living in the city itself and maintain our income from, and pay taxes to the city resent the preferential treatment of those not contributing to revitalization of inner city living.

The areas in which Verizon are deploying FIOS in and around Richmond where made public some weeks ago via TV and newspaper. All areas are generally upper income neighborhoods, including Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield, and that information should come as no surprise to anyone who has been following Verizon's FIOS deployment and is certainly not a closely held secret.

Remember, Verizon's FIOS deployment is not for the masses, but for selected areas within communities where Verizon feels the service will attract a high adoption rate. This activity is known as 'cream skimming'. An activity Verizon likes so much they appeared before one subcommittee of the Virginia General Assembly last year to have the regulations changed as to where and how they can deploy FIOS TV, multimedia, and phone services.

They will try again next year.

I know it'll be odd for an outsider like me to pipe up, but I'd say that a service like FIOS needs to know that its retention rates will be high in order to sustain such rapid growth. Having worked ISP support before (not for Verizon), I can tell you that there are customers who routinely subscribe to more services than they can afford, or who will gladly cancel and resubscribe to services to exploit the "3 months at half-price!" deals. A wealthy suburb will have people for whom $50 a month is perfectly reasonable - they may even subscribe to the $200-per-month plan and not bat an eye. That's money in the bank for Verizon.

I don't doubt that Verizon will expand into more middle-of-the-road areas over time, but probably only when economies of scale work in their favour.

I would have as much of a problem with this type of roll out except for the rest of us that cannot even get DSL, they stop rolling out that in order to do their FIOS. So for those that have nothing will still have nothing. For those that already have service will just keep getting better service. Byt the time they get to the point of doing something for those of us that have nothing, they will not do anything for us as they will then say they have run out of money.

Typical big business playing to the rich!!!!

Hello Again. I saw a Verizon FIOS Team laying fiber on W. Broad St. (1800 block) near DMV. I flagged them down and they said that fan area service was coming shortly and that Midlothian was already setting up facilities as well.

Across the street from my house I live on Park Avenue in the Westend they said it would be available soon and they are running the final tests now. He said he couldn't give me an exact date but it would be available very soon.

The Fan area of Richmond will be one of the first areas in Richmond to have fiber placed. Last time I checked that are is very diverse. Both wealthy and very poor live in that area. Yes, its true, Verizon will skim the cream. What would you do if it was your money? I guess you would place billions of dollars into a product and hope to get squat off your investment.

I would actually roll it out in areas that also do not have any other options from my company. They tend to have this habit about giving new technology to those areas that already have service but then when it comes time to roll it out further, after all the media hype is gone, they drop off the radar and forget about the rest because they have made their money.

Funny document. Apparently Verizon thinks Henrico Co. has swallowed all of Richmond City proper.

No Staples Mill and Dumbarton roads. You'd think they'd want to string some fiber there in front of Comcast's Henrico Co. headend.

Truly helpful information! I really appreciate it. Luckily I am out of the Stuart Avenue C.O., so things are looking good for me. Thanks again.

FIOS installation here in Chesterfield County started in late March and has been finished in our community for quite a long time. I was wondering if anyone knew the time frame as to when it becomes active after the installation has been completed. Verizon trucks are no longer in our community working on the system which makes it seem like it has been completed.

According to one FIOS rep I spoke with, once the cable is laid, the turnup date is still a couple of months away. Probably two to three months to be more precise. Per the rep, a lot of "testing" begins before the CO goes into production. Not encouraging, but definitely a step in the right direction.
