Help with selecting circles in photoshop

I'm using PS 7.0 and need to select circles (coins). I use the circle selection tool and hold the shift key down to make a perfect circle. The problem is with getting the right diameter. I can't seem to find a way to anchor the starting point and the whole circle moves as it is drawn. Then there does not seem to be a way to re-size the it after it is drawn. So if it is not the right size I have to start over. This means it's a trial and error process to get just the right diameter. It gets very frustrating after awhile - is there a better way?

If you hold shift and alt it will start from the centre out as well as keep a circle. Then I'd use selection modify increase/decrease to get exactly what I want.

Thanks fourboxers - that is just what I was looking for. I thought there had to be a way of doing that, but just could not find it.

Is there any way of making the canvas round to fit the circle? Or is it always square or rectangular?

The canvas is always square or rectangular, since I know you have to save your images as high quality jpegs transparency is not available. Transparency would give the appearance of circular but the canvas would still not be.

Photoshop does have guides which can be used to to insure your circular selection is exactly the correct size and in the correct position. Just pull a guide to one side of the circular object you wish to select then pull a guide to the top or bottom. Hold the Shift key down and begin where the guides intersect and keep going until the circle is selected. By pulling guides I mean from the rulers. I pull my guides from the rulers for ease.

Photoshop has two rulers and a measuring stick. These can assist you in doing a number of things. The ruler tool can be used to measure the diameter of a circle. There is an area on the Tool Bar for setting the exact size you want your selection to be. Just nudge it into place with the arrow keys.

Click for full size
You can also set a fixed size in the Style Options.
So if you want a 1/2 inch circle just enter .5in in each box.

edit: I didn't realize this thread was so old

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm pretty much a novice with photoshop so any advice is welcome.
