| [ALL] Actual download and Upload speeds?
hey ok i have a question im in nevada and i have (supposidly) 4meg down and like 512 up or something like that. anyways.. i have a few questions. 1. what does that exactly mean? because i sure as hell am not downloading at 4 megs a second. the most i have EVER seen was about 400k a sec. but that was rare. so i dont really understand that whole thing. also i just changed a splitter(from a two to a three one) and cable cord(the old one broke) i had the other day and now it seems like the internet is going super slow now.. would splitting it into three instead of two make the internet go slow (the other two lines are for tv's not computers) so i dont know. maybe its just slow for everyone and i just had bad timing.. anyone? |

| If you mean 400kilobytes, then that equals 3277kilobits which is close to your advertised speed.
Maybe you just need a little tweaking. Post the URL for a Tweak Test »/tweaks
On the splitter did you hook the MODEM to the -3.5dB split?

| The splitter specs are OK. The MODEM should be on one of the outside ports and not the middle one. There should be some making on the splitter or the package that it came in.
I don't know if that MODEM has diag pages. Try going to »192.168.100.1

The Tweak Test looks OK except for those retransmissions. You might have line issues.

The older 3 tests listed there show some big problems with your download speed; the first listed one is fine. Are you sure that when you say you only get 400k/s, you mean 400kbits (speed test) or 400kBYTES (download speed listed on your browser). BYTES are bits divided by 8. Cable providers advertise in BITS so they can advertise a bigger number. If you are getting 400kBYTES/s download, then you're fine, you probably won't see much more than ~550, ever, unless COX upgrades speeds there. -- "True warriors do not follow paths, they make them. | reply to Tsume dont know if this is related at all.. but i just tried drping and it said this
"Sorry, 39 pings (3 per IP) gave errors or timeouts, 65 from 78 IPs were pingable. - no record will be made. "
i also just took three more speed tests and got this.. so maybe that thing was just a one time thing? but 2896 is still pretty low for what i am advertized to have right? hmm

1 edit | Those tests are saying you're getting a tiny bit over 1/2 the speed you should be, which depends on your opinion whether it's acceptable for you or not.
The highest you in theory shold get is 512kBYTES/s, because you are being advertised 4000kbits/s, which = 512kBYTES which means the 400kBYTES you said earlier is perfectly good, close to advertised speed.
However ~2000kbits (~256kBYTES downloading files) is, for ME, unacceptable, and I'd have to call cox and ask why I'm only getting 1/2 of my advertised downstream speed.
Also, the 39 ping timeout, I get the same exact number of timeouts, I just chock it up to a problem with the sites that the program DrPing pings.
Edit: Just want to emphasize that 4000kbits (what cox says you get) is ~ 512kBYTES per second download speed. Your upload speed is great, I get the same. Your download speed measures about 1/2 of what mine is though, so you might want to call COX on that. Downloading files on your browser or ftp or whatever at 2000kbits = 256kBYTES/s listed speed on that program. |
