4200 5200 Lovin' :p
Due to the problems I was having, Bell decided to send me a new modem hoping it would fix the problem, which it didn't (check the first 2 pics.)

I used the instructions from »Unlocking your Speedstream 5200 E242 on the 4200 and they worked. Port forwarding (NAPT,) host config, dhcp config, and firewall seem to work fine.

Speed performance seems comparable to the 5200 & 5360. Regarding the heat issue, the 4200 gets just as hot as the 5200, maybe even hotter as it's in a more confined space.

Nice pics. Man, the 4200 is TINY! It looks nicer than the old 5200 (both revisions).

Regarding the heat issue - place the modem on a (kitchen) trivet or a cork pad used in a kitchen for hot items. This will prevent scorching whatever surface it is resting on.

Actually continued presure from any hot surface can damage your surface.

Yeah no kidding. If anything, the hottest part of the modem would be the TOP casing. The chipset is on the top side of the PCB, and heat rises, remember.

same here. 5200 e242 works great. I'd like to try out the 4200 but just not sure if it would be as stable as my current modem.

I have the e242 and no heat issues.
It doesn't emit a high pitched noise, but I only even notice it when my PC (which sits right next to it) is off and the room is quiet. Either than that, it's fine.

I use E242. No heat, no noise. And it is transferring 24/7 (I got like 10 torrents always running). I love it.

I was interested in playing around with a 4200, but heat is a real turn off. :/

How is it possible the 5200 E242 unlocking instructions work on the 4200 but not on the 5200 E240 if they're all running Bell firmware?

I want to unlock mine but I'm not upgrading to non Bell firmware when my modem is running just fine.

Easy. The E240 does not use the same Bell Firmware as the E242. It is impossible. The E240 is a now obsolete TI AR5 Chipset while the E242 is the TI AR7 Chipset like the 4100/4200. Plus the interface screenshots show this fact.

FYI: That screenshot of the E242 is of the unlocked interface. If not unlocked, it looks identical to the E240.

Eots, If you are using a 5200 E240, and running the Bell firmware (Update_E240_A4R_BC34_f093_v2r.exe), than the unlocking steps for the E242 work fine. Just tried it on a spare 5200 E240 here, and had no problems. Make sure you're properly following the steps in that post.

Sorry, but I am too lazy to arse myself to reset my modem and unlock it again for a screenshot.

Maybe someone else with an E242, that is not unlocked can take a screenshot for us.
