| Am I running WPA successfully with my BEFW11S4?
I have a Linksys BEFW11S4, ver. 4, with the latest firmware. I have SSID broadcast off, WPA PSK-TKIP with a password that is gibberish (no words), and I have the MAC address filter set for the three computers of mine which need access.
I am very concerned about my wireless security, because I live in a big apartment complex in a busy section of town.
I have collected a series of about a dozen MAC addresses which periodically show up on the router's Wireless Client MAC List. Their computer names are blank, and their IP addresses are listed as 0.0.0.0.
Are these persons being blocked by my system satisfactorily? Or is there something else I need to be doing?
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Respectfully, Mayo |

By the way not broadcasting the SSID has NO effect on security. So turn it back on. -- Shooter Ready--Stand By BEEP ******** |

To add to Shootist's suggestion, not only turn your SSID back on, but put your channel number in the SSID so your neighbors can see what channel you use and hopefully avoid using the same channel. This will have no effect on your security at all (doesn't add to or take away any security).
I have seen the long discussions here that turning off SSID adds a small amount of security but I look at it like, if you have a good lock on a door (say retinal scan secured deadbolt ) then what use would it be to then put a sign on the door that says "There is no door here", which is essentially what turning off SSID does? |
