| DSL drops
Our neighbors recently got dsl and they asked me to install it. The installation went fine for one computer and the connection is fine. The modem is a 4100. It is when I setup the router DI-524 from d-link that the connection gets cut off. I set it for pppoe and entered the username and password, but when i click connect it does nothing. The log file says can not connect retrying. If I set the router to dynamic ip the internet works and the connection is shared between the 2 pc's. The problem with that is when the computers are not used the connection is dropped and the router must be reset to establish a new connection. Any help is appreciated. |

If it's like the 5100b just type 192.168.0.1 and if you can take some screen shots for us. This is a new modem that many of us have not played with or installed yet so. |

| reply to jdubb5005 Unforutnately I will not be able to get screen shots until tuesday. I will post them when I can get them. Am I correct in that I am supposed to be using pppoe with the router? The router ip is 192.168.0.1 and I know the modem ip is the same is that causing a conflict? |

Look at this FAQ »Ameritech - SBC FAQ »Funhouse 5100b Setup and Reference Info on the 5100b. Scroll down to the part that it talks about the router. What I did was have the 5100b do the PPPoE and let the router be the firewall. Which means changing the router LAN IP to 192.168.2.1 that way you can access the modem and router. Another option is to set the modem to bridge mode which means you can't access it or any stats which I don't like. |

| reply to jdubb5005 It sounds like the modem is doing the PPPoE, If you want the router to do the PPPoE you'll need to erase the user ID and password from the modem.
The other problem may be caused by the modem timing out the connection, you may need to tinker with the connection timeout setting of the router also.
