Comcast Summer 2005 Speed Upgrade Discussion

As you probably know by now, Comcast has announced the New Speed Increases and Pricing.

An earlier thread here had discussions on what might be:
»Comcast tech says speed upgrades are coming !!!

As per the Comcast.net Forums Official Announcement thread:
»forums.comcast.net/thread.jspa?t···tstart=0

New Service/Price Chart
With these new speed offerings, Comcast will be offering the High-Speed Internet at the following tiers of service.

If you currently do not subscribe to any Comcast Cable TV or Comcast Phone services, you will have the following options for HSI available to you:

Down Up

(Mbps) (kbps) Price

4 384 $57.95

6 384 $67.95

8 768 $77.95

If you currently subscribe to Limited Comcast Cable TV service or Comcast Digital Voice, the following HSI options are available to you:

Down Up

(Mbps) (kbps) Price

4 384 $42.95

6 384 $52.95

8 768 $62.95

If you currently subscribe to at least Comcast Expanded Basic Cable TV service or above, the following HSI options are available to you:

Down Up

(Mbps) (kbps) Price

6 384 $42.95

8 768 $52.95

Modem Compatibility
If your current cable modem has been in service for more than 4 years, there is a chance that your modem may not be able to achieve these new speeds.

So if you are currently renting one of the modems not on the approved list from Comcast, please contact your local Comcast office to find instructions on how to upgrade your modem to a newer model. If you currently own one of the above modems, you may want to consider renting a modem from Comcast for a $3/month cost or replace the modem with a newer model in the FAQ list of approved modems above.

Mod Note: Updated link to the Comcast approved modem list added here per request of dadkins See Profile on 7-16-05. ~sorto'

GDM,

Most customers on this tier will be automatically upgraded to the faster 8Mbps/768kbps, which is the new premium tier Comcast is marketing. We will, of course, grandfather and continue to support any existing 6/768 customer who is currently paying for this service and wishes to keep it.

With a basic Cable TV subscription through Comcast, the 8/768 tier will be $62.95/month. The only exception would be a customer who falls under the description of your first question, where some customers may be automatically upgraded to this speed for the $52.95/month price.

Personally I think it's stupid and typical comcast fashion.

Why do they keep saying the SB4100 can't do more than 5.8Mbps? It can do 10Mbps without any problems, OOL proves this.

I have the SB4100 and can achieve speeds over 4200 on the silver tier. I would expect the same when I am upgraded to 6mb.

I've officially stopped caring about this upgrade, it's making my brain hurt.

How in any way is this stupid??

It is basically giving Non-cable subscribers MORE choices to make (and in turn, pay less than they would).

You can keep what you have now - pay $10 more for 6 meg, or pay $20 more for 8 meg.

It's stupid because I can guarantee you that the grand-father crap won't hold true. If they were going to give us choices they would keep the gold tier at the same pricing structure it has always been.

How is it fair for them to raise prices??? Explain to me how any of this for non-cable people is fair.

It's a business tactic, plain & simple to try and get more of the non cable tv subscribers to subscribe to at least expanded basic or pay more. I am not downright supporting the increase in pricing for non cable tv subscribers but can see where comcast is coming from.

I currently pay $63 for 6/768, so how is this going to be better for me?

Hmmmm...... I subscribe to basic cable and have the 6000/768 speed tier for an additional $10.00. If I'm reading Jason's comments correctly, it's now going to cost another $10.00 (in addition to the FIRST $10.00) to keep my 768 upload!!

"With a basic Cable TV subscription through Comcast, the 8/768 tier will be $62.95/month. The only exception would be a customer who falls under the description of your first question, where some customers may be automatically upgraded to this speed for the $52.95/month price."

Am I missing something?

It appears that the only people that will keep their current prices are those who have at least expanded basic cable tv.

Instead of increasing the speed all of the time, why can't they lower the price.

I would love a 2mb for $19.99 service.

Sounds to me like they are going to upgrade to DOCSIS 2.0
It would make sense to announce the modems that are only 1.0 & 1.1 may not achieve new speeds in a DOCSIS 2.0 environment. It happened to me. When they upgraded us to 2.0, my 1.0 modem maxed out at 3700. New DOCSIS 2.0 modem took me to 4700.

I just asked how will this grandfathered option realllly work and this is the response. I am a little worried about how this is going to get handled. I never got notice when the upgrades happened last time.

GDM,

This may be subject to change but the information that I currently have available states that if you currently subscribe to HSI only at the Gold tier (6Mbps/768kbps), if you do nothing when the speed upgrades are rolled out, you will maintain this 6Mbps/768kbps service until you make any changes to your HSI service (i.e. if you temporarily cancel or move to another service tier, you will lose the option to return to the 6Mbps/768kbps service in the future).

Notification will likely be sent once upgrades have been completed in your area to notify you of the new services/options that are available but you will not have to take any action if you want to leave your service as it currently stands.

No you wont have to pay an extra 10 dollars. It says clearly if you are a non cable tv customer it will be an extra 10 dollars for 6 mb and an extra 20 for 8 mb. Its been the same its always been where non cable tv users pay extra for internet.

Basically the upgrade is only affecting cable tv subscribers free of cost. If you are non cable and are currently at 6mb you will have to dish out another 10 for 8 mb. For the same price you do get to stay at 6mb. The only issue i see with this is that your upload will be decreased and you still will be paying the same.

No it's not it's changed. The new 6meg only has 384 upload and the 8meg goes to 768. Supposedly we will be grandfathered but I don't trust that will happen.

Also if a new non CATV person subscribes to HSI for $10 $67.95 more they get 6/384 and $20 $77.95 they get 8/768.

I hope imrf is right. I own the SB4100 and here's my speed test result.

Download Speed: 6180 kbps (772.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 707 kbps (88.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

It is not correct to say that one needs 'Expd./Std. Cable or above', because 'above' implies Std. and Digital. In reality, one just needs Std. or Digital. Please note this on your chart.

And, yes, one can get Digital packages w/o Std. cable. Of course, Ltd. Basic is always required.

"Comcast is delivering the faster 6Mbps speed to customers who also subscribe to its Standard or Digital Cable services* at no additional charge."

lazsheriff;

I think you misread my post, since in your last sentence you state exactly what I was trying to convey.

My point was that to keep my 768 upload, for which I am currently paying $52.95 ($42.95 + $10.00), I will have to pay yet another $10.00, bringing the total to $62.95.
