Re: Comcast Summer 2005 Speed Upgrade Discussion

Sorry, I don't work for Comcast(contrary to what I have been accused of), I get most of my info where we all can... Comcast.net.

If I hear anything "new" I will post it here.

Instead of speed and price increases. How about LOWERING the prices for the 4mb/384 for non-catv customers?

I think you misread my post, since in your last sentence you state exactly what I was trying to convey.

My point was that to keep my 768 upload, for which I am currently paying $52.95 ($42.95 + $10.00), I will have to pay yet another $10.00, bringing the total to $62.95.
sorry, i did misread. So even with just "basic" cable the price will still rise to 62 for 8mb tier and 72 for non cable tv subscribers.

Meaning in order to keep the same rate you have to upgrade from basic cable to expanded etc.

Correct?

It's not a "Rollback" at Walmart.
They would rather give you more for your money.

Correct......either pay the additional $10.00(on top of the original $10.00 extra fee), or pay for expanded basic......either way, it costs me more to keep my 768 up.

I was considering getting the 6/768 package for 10 more, but now with the upload halved, its not even close to worth it now the middle tier of 6/384 seems extremely pointless.

From Jason(Mod) at Comcast.net:

" We will, of course, grandfather and continue to support any existing 6/768 customer who is currently paying for this service and wishes to keep it."

Found this under the Comcast General News. Is Multichannel News inaccurate, specifically about upstream for both tiers being 768k? I know that Comcast has already come out but I was just wondering if there was maybe a change?

Comcast Upgrades to 8 Mbps
By Matt Stump 7/12/2005 1:41:00 PM

Comcast Corp. will begin providing its high-speed Internet subscribers with an 8-megabit-per-second downstream, 768-kilobit-per-second upstream service later this month in Pennsylvania, New England, New Jersey, Maryland, Michigan and Washington, D.C.

The company is also upgrading its lower-tier service to 6 mbps downstream and 768 kbps upstream. The speed increases are automatic for current subscribers.

Nonvideo customers will pay $10 more per month for the 6-mbps service and $20 more for the 8-mbps service.

I would be very happy to be able to get the 4 384 I currently pay for, 24 hours a day.

As it is now the only time I can get this speed is after 2am until around 11am. The rest of the day, it is at least 25% lower on the download side, with large packet losses down stream from me.

Several truck rolls have resulted in no change. When I tested my next door neighbour system, he has the same problem, but does not really care because of very light uses, mostly a few emails a day.

As for higher speeds.... good luck. I just want the current speeds reliably 24 hours a day.

Yey 2 Mb extra speed

Ok I currently have 4Mb, for me there is no difference between 4Mb and 6Mb, so whats the points. If I ever, or whenever I max out my connection it doesn't last more than couple hours anyways.

Why not make the upload at least 512Kb, other wise what is the point of the upgrade. It only looks good on paper against dsl speeds...

Sounds to me like they are going to upgrade to DOCSIS 2.0
It would make sense to announce the modems that are only 1.0 & 1.1 may not achieve new speeds in a DOCSIS 2.0 environment.
No, that's not it. There are still plenty on that list that are 1.0 and/or 1.1, the Motorola SB4200 for example, which is identical to the 4100. It's just that whoever keeps making that list or whoever is telling that person isn't too bright.

I'm confused now. I currently have Basic Cable TV and the 4mbps/384kbps high speed internet. So what does this speed upgrade mean for me? Am I staying where I'm at or being upgraded on downstream only to 6mbps?

What took you so long?
That makes more sense. Blindfold the employee formulating the list of approved modems and get him to throw a dart at the "Wheel of shitfull modems"

Marketing! The average broadband customer doesn't upload as much as download.

It depends. Do you have limited basic tv or expanded basic tv?

If you have limited basic tv (generally around $10-$15 per month), then your price and speed for HSI will stay the same.

If you have expanded basic tv, you will eventually be upgraded to have faster download speeds for free.

I know we don't pay $10-$15 a month for cable. It's a lot more, but I'm not quite sure we have expanded. I couldn't find any information on which channels expanded includes. I know for sure that we don't have digital.

I checked the comcast site the basic cable package was around 9 bucks and includes about 25 channels and then theres the standard cable package that was around 54 a month which has mtv, vh1, etc etc.

Some people have said the SB4100 gets speeds upto 10Mb (proven by OOL), does anyone know about the SB3100? It's on the list of modems not supportive of the new speeds, I just want to make sure.

I planned on upgrading the modem soon, and this will give me an excuse to do so, if I actually do need to.
