Re: Success with WRT54GX Firmware on Belkin Pre-N!

I'm not sure about Win2K.

Can you do a quick check to see if the WRT54GX firmware supports Radius authentication? If it does, I'm sold. I'll be flashing this baby in short order.

Re: Success with WRT54GX Firmware on Belkin Pre-N!

Strange... I gave up my old WRT54GS to get better wireless range and speed with the Belkin Pre-N. Did this before Linksys released the WRT54GX. The Linksys firmware (and 3rd party derivatives) were very feature rich and my first impression was that the Belkin firmware was a bit "thin" in comparison. Made me wish I had waited longer and gotten WRT54GX instead.

Now it looks like I can have my Linksys in a stylish Belkin package.

Time to break out my hex editor and do some flashin.

What hex editor is that if you don't mind me asking? It's strange as it does not show its name or the file path, but it does looks kind of nice...

LOL... The reason it does not show that info is I lopped off the top of the window when I snapshotted the screen. The editor is called "HHD Software Free HEX Editor", Info available here: »www.hhdsoftware.com/free-hex-editor.html

I went ahead and flashed to the WRT54GX. Worked perfectly. Preserved all my "belkin" settings. WPA/Radius with AES works fine with my RADIUS server.

One difference. With belkin firmware, you use the WAN port to connect to your local LAN when running in AP-only mode. With Linksys firmware, you must use a LAN port when running in AP mode, and leave the WAN port unused (If anyone learns otherwise, let us know ). This is pretty standard for Linksys as that is how the WRT54G and GS models worked.

Also, the DHCP server address range settings are not picked up correctly. Since I disabled DHCP, it didn't make any difference. But those who use the built-in DHCP server will need to adjust the values.

After I run for a while and make sure everything is hunky dorey, I'll try to flash back to Belkin firmware. I see no reason why that wouldn't work, though.

I'm posting this msg from my Dell laptop connected to the Pre-N with Linksys firmware. So its working fine at the moment.

This is very cool.

Re: Success with WRT54GX Firmware on Belkin Pre-N!

Let me see if I've got this right for my Belkin 8230...

I've modified the Linksys firmware v 1.02.06USA and changed the first 3 pairs of hex characters to match my Belkin firmare v 1.01.03 (00 2F 01).

Then all I need to do is browse to this file through the web interface and update?

This sounds way too easy!

As of July 19th, there is a new firmware update for the WRT54GX on the Linksys site. V2.0. Has anyone tried it with the Pre-N yet?
