Sunny Walthamstow, eh?
I'm not aware of any censorship here - there are unkind things posted about D-Link every day.
D-Link is a strange company. They have an enormous range of products sold all round the world, with different products in different geographies - it must be a support nightmare. Why they don't simplify the range escapes me...
For what it's worth, my view is that they make good products - when they're running good, reliable firmware.
As far as the DSL-504T is concerned, I have installed several - and many other products in the T-series range - without problem. I own a DSL-G604T and a DSL-300T as well as other D-Link routers, access points and switches (don't ask). All work well.
I am aware that there have been less software releases in the UK for the DSL-504T compared to the DSL-G604T, but then that's not saying much.
You don't say what your problem is, but the two most common issues on this range of products, together with their well-known workrounds, are:
- the router 'hanging' after a random period. Solution: disable DNS Relay, and enter your ISP's DNS server addresses manually. Check they are issued by the DHCP server so that the DNS lookup is done directly against the DNS servers, not against the router's cache.
- the router 'hanging' when using peer-to-peer applications. This is caused by too many concurrent NAT sessions, compounded by some over-long protocol timeout values which cause memory to become filled with 'stale' session data. Solution: tweak the default netfilter settings. Find a Telnet script to do this here: »www.expansys.com/forumthread.asp···an=D-LIN
The T-series products are pretty good, although their build quality leaves something to be desired in my opinion. They are an enthusiast's paradise, with an embedded Linux to play with, and D-Link has published the GPL'd source code. There is even 3rd party firmware available.
The product is virtually crashproof (by which I mean a crashed device can always (?) be recovered) thanks to the AR7's debug monitor. And don't think you can escape to Netgear - the DG834G is almost the same product as the DSL-G604T but with a different config interface (I suspect the same is true of the DG834 and the DSL-504T but don't know for certain), as are many other branded products based on the AR7.
If you want to move to V2.00 software and can't wait for D-Link UK to get round to it, you could always load it from the D-Link Australia site. Other users report that it works just fine. It includes an upgrade to ADSL2+ (not much use in the UK yet) and also includes SNMP as well as assorted bugfixes. Find it here: »www.dlink.com.au/tech/drivers/fi···504t.htm
Hope this helps - now, what was your problem? |
