DEVILS ADVOCATE MODE ON

Just "suppose" for a minute that this is indeed a social engineering trick to get people to give up a 'valid' email address by requiring them to validate it.

They say that we will only get the free software if they can verify 100,000 legitimate addresses.....

SO, what's stopping them from saying no matter if they get 100k of them or not that we're not getting our software because they didn't get their 100,000 addresses....can WE audit their records or challenge this...? Likely not and they know it because they are giving it away for *free* as long as certain conditions are being met (or not as the case may be).

Wonder how they're going to limit the spread of the download URL because once they start to mail it out, expect some n00b to post it in the »Users find Hot Deals (non hardware) forum or see it up on fat wallet or /.

DEVILS ADVOCATE MODE OFF

Even in spite of this possibility, I am cautiously optimistic at this point about getting anything from these folks....

I've got a cron job set up to log the counter(and a page copy) every minute for statistical analysis. If they mess with the counter significantly, it will probably be apparent.

OTOH, how do you know the "free" cad isn't really a "free" trial version?

On the press release
"While admitting that they are trying to bring a "bit of fun" to the CAD market, the spokesperson says that they intend to reveal who they are in the days to come, and want to emphasize that X-CAD is not a demo or a limited-time, trial-only product. Users are assured they will enjoy a depth and breadth of rich features, including "on-the-fly" automatic constraint capture, auto-dimensioning, assembly modeling and more."

It looks close so far!

Current average rate is:
0.0212398 registrations per second.

15 days from now (1296000 seconds), there would be:
0.0212398*1296000=27526.8 additional registrations, to make about 112274 total.

Of course, this is based on only 2.7 hours of samples, so it is probably very inaccurate. I'll recalculate tomorrow. It is heading for the 100K mark, though!

Of course, I'm still waiting for the Schick razor that was promised to the first 100,000 people who signed up for it last summer *grin*

I got my free Schick razor quite a while ago, unless it was a different promotion (think the one I signed up for was this January).

Really hoping this X-CAD thing works out, I always enjoy playing with new software (though I've never done CAD).

Ah! You're right, it was January. I don't know why I was thinking last summer...but I STILL never got one *grumbles and toes the dirt with his sneakers* I've been forced to use a belt sander to keep my face baby smooth.
