@verizon.n

 [policy and politics] newsgroups...

I've noticed that the verizon TOS states 5 connections as the maximum number allowed to the newsgroups. However, I've read in other posts here that one can actually make up to 8 connections. I've tried 8 connections, and it did indeed work (fully maxes out my line amid the recent usenet slowdown).

I was just wondering if opening 8 connections might be problematic, as far as the TOS goes. Or is 8 the new number, and they just haven't updated the TOS? If 5 is their max as per the TOS, how come one is able to successfully open 8? what is going on here!? Thanks;)

NNTP rocks

FWIW, I've never been able to make more than 4 connections using XNews. I always assumed that was server-enforced, so I'm surprised to hear that someone might be able to make 8 connections. Strange.

X-News is limiting you to 4 connections. One of the many reasons I switched to Newsleecher. From the X-News manual.....

"Per GNKSA requirement, Xnews limits you to 4 simultaneous connections to the same news server. Be advised, however, that some servers may set an even lower limit, such as 2 or 3."

Hmmm...

If I run less than six connections to either VOL NNTP server, I usually CAN'T saturate my 3 Meg/s D/L speed. I've been running eight connections for D/L'ing stuff and can usually maintain 2.9 Meg/s at any time of the day (DUMeter bar graph flat-tops with very few glitches). It seems that my newsreader proggy only allows one connection for getting headers, and that's painfully slow from VOL, especially in active groups lke a.b.dvd (right now I'm getting headers at a rate of ~400-500 Kb/s from the NY server farm).

By contrast, when I connect into Easynews' NNTP servers (IIRC they have no limit on # of connections), I usually pull headers at 2.4-2.6 Meg/s with one connection and saturate at 2.9 Meg/s with two connections for D/L'ing.

I too have set my reader to eight connections for VOL, based on posts here. I'd hate to get a nasty note from VOL if the limit is five (I don't need to be that speed greedy).

Does anyone know, for sure, what the real number is?

I have been using 10 connections with no problems.

Heh! Talk about pushing the envelope!

I gotta say that for an ISP run news server, VOL is surprising. Except for retention, they're almost as good as Easynews or other "pay for" news services. I rarely have to go there to pick up missing parts from posts to a.b.dvd. And with about 2 week retention, there's plenty of time to D/L just about anything you want (unless you suffer from extreme gluttony ).

All I can get is a maximum of eight. In Newsbin, if I try to have more than 8 connections, I get the following error message: "error talking to server: 400 Too many connections [vol-east allows 8 per host/0 per feed". My guess is that the maximum is 8.

I'm in a ex-GTE area and 10 connections works great with Newsbin. I am using 130.81.64.196 as my server address.

Yea, that's the server that I connect to also. I'm in an ex-BA area, though, maybe that has something to do with it. Who knows.

I've pulled 8 no problem with grabit or newsbin. Seems to me though the most effecient is running 3. That tops me out at 2880 and running more never increases my speed so why bother.

Strange, because I have to have at least 8 connections to get a 2.8 download speed. At 3 connections I would be lucky to get 1.0.
