| Create a private forum for all Weather topics
I have asked before but I have always asked in the context of a general open forum which would probably not draw very many people from the rest of the forums. I now wonder if there might be room for a private forum for us weather junkies.
This private Forum would be for those of us who wish to discuss the Latest developments in website and desktop RSS feeds, Cap and Xhmtl feeds, weather applications, hard core weather programs, weather sites and of course all aspects of the weather.
The weather forum would be used to alert others of new desktop applications, weather sites, the latest tech updates from NOAA, the NWS and the NHC.
This private forum would be also used to track all storms, hurricanes, tornado, winter storms and weather around the world, thus keeping them out of the other forums where we post because the regulars there get tired of bad news.
This private forum would be for premium members only but open to all who would like to check out the latest information. The weather forum would be set up just like the other private forums as far as posting, courtesy and general rules of ethics apply.

You know quite a bit about weather. Why not start your own weather discussion site? Hell, I'll even host it for you free of charge... |

simply on the grounds that if we can't get an automotive forum here, then there should be no weather forum either.
On that note, we "hey mod" the hell out of trollers and off-topicers in the weather threads. |

On that note, we "hey mod" the hell out of trollers and off-topicers in the weather threads. That is one of the main reasons for wanting a private forum for weather dicussions. I notice that as a storm progreses such as Emily, she moves out of the southeast spere of interest into where, Texas..The only people really interested in weather will stay with the topic no matter where it goes, we wont have to "Hey Mod" when we get a comment about enough is enough and the persoanl slander that goes along.
I belong to 3 other groups all of them associated with Yahoo. Yahoo forums groups does not have the feel of BBR, never will.
I have my own weather site as do several others, but we are always looking for a central meeting place to dicuss weather related topics or issues. Like I said, only BBR has the right feel, we have tried the rest, BBR is the best. -- We fold for cures. The Heart Beat Of The Planet Is Here. Earth Log II »earthlogii.blogspot.com/ |

I don't see the numbers to justify making a whole new forum dedicated to weather and weather programs. How many weather threads are being made now? How many updates are there for weather programs that need to be announced? Give us statistics to justify your request. -- nfx |

| Currently there are weather related threads in the Texas, Southeast, Southern Calif, South West, Team Helix, Canada and Washington State to name a few, several with responses numbering in the hundreds.
As far as weather related software threads at least 3 that I am aware of.
With news laws coming on the books, thousands of new RSS and CAP feeds to learn.
That is one reason I would like to make it a private forum, that way everyone knows what it is upfront and if they want to participate they can. Its not a Hey Mods issue at all...It is merely a means of taking the long weather related threads out of those forums where the other residents get bored of them and place them all in one central forum.
I think we would have as many people there as are now in the political forums. And besides if it fails it fails, we will never know unless we try it... -- We fold for cures. The Heart Beat Of The Planet Is Here. Earth Log II »earthlogii.blogspot.com/ |

And while local to the SE or what ever other region... that discussion is fine.... but for thoise who LIVE by weather patterns and make CRITICAL descissions on available data of the moment another matter.
But where one can rip off MP3's is more important and anymore truly "broadband" relative... except for stealing FASTER
But there are ALL kinds of forums here that really have NOTHING to do with broadband... this is a topic of both WIDE and GENERAL interest for many here.
Whilke you could say that EMILY never threatened Key West I wouldn't care.... but yes on a historical pattern I VERY MUCH paid attention to her behavior.... and we as far away as we were got VERY interesting strong breezes and weather patterns from her.
After Deniis we really didn't need any thing more right off... I am still carving up tree limbs and a SECOND 25 ft plus pile of debris from a just over 7000 sq ft yard... of whick 1600 is the house and carport/ porch
And this was just a major (18 hour) brush not even a direct hit (as Geeorges was in 98)

I like it just how it is now. The momentum in our forum has really picked up in the last year because of our weather patterns. I have noticed more ppl checking in off season more than ever before. If we were to isolate our topics in a general forum discussing other weather topics, (like cold and snow) we would all get bored with it and lose interest. Weather topics in local forums opens further discussion. Discussion we can all relate to. I Think a forum stricky on weather would be nothing more than cut and paste from NOAA. -- Bon Appétit!! |

This forum would be more used for a technical discussion of the weather patterns... let's face it, the discussions of things like Bermuda highs, convection zones, and the difference between low-, mid-, and high-level shear (etc.) are considerably different from "hey, any storm damage?" and other assorted storm reports. The former would be ideal in the new forum, whereas the latter could easily go in either, but would probably be better suited for the regional forums.

| A private or general weather forum would include all facets of weather, including, earthquake and volcanoes discussions, technical applications, in which there are hundreds and of course tracking storms all around the world.
As to the argument that it is not technical, I would venture to say that we could find more people involved with the technical aspect of the new generation of radar coming next year than any one in the political forums, which have nothing at all to do with anything technical.
Not that I am am disking the political forums, I post there as well, but there are many forums here that are private that have nothing to do with anything remotely technical.
At least the weather forum or what ever we would call it would be full of maps, radar, professional stories, Scientific journals, reports from NOAA, the NWS, the NHC, AccurWeather, the USGS and Tyhpoon tracking stations in Japan and Hong Kong...Cant get any more technical than that.... -- We fold for cures. Yes to your questions, but as you know, after the first notices and alerts are posted, many of the resident of the forums get tired of them, and don't want to see them anymore, I know, I get the IM, telling me enough already, take it somewhere else or since I don't live in the area I don't deserve to post there. Yes I get them all.
So I would like to see the site devoted to the technical aspects of the weather, earthquakes and other earth news and also the posting of all weather related information because the forums where the original alerts are posted would all have links back to the weather forum to follow the various stories and storms, like Emily.
But it can also change as the forum develops to see which format serves BBR the best. -- We fold for cures. The Heart Beat Of The Planet Is Here. Earth Log II »earthlogii.blogspot.com/ |

I like this idea, not only because I'm a bit of a weather junkie, but also because it would centralize weather threads. The mod of this weather forum could link a sticky in the forums of affected areas, that way people could get the info they need. At the same time, it could allow complete amatuers like me to learn things. Personally, I think a forum like this would get a lot more traffic than some of the city forums. -- Click this and read. -> »www.actsofgord.com/ »Canadian Wireless FAQ I'm laying pipe, all night long, laying pipe, to satisfy that woman. - David Wilcox |

| reply to ghostpainter I was thinking about some of the technical aspects of the weather, and I thought I would post about a technical aspect of weather, that most people don't even think about. And that is RSS feeds.
A question and answer might look something like this....
What are those funny little red xml symbols you see on weather sites and even here at DSL.
The response...
What is RSS?
RSS has several meanings: Really Simple Syndication, Rich Site Summary, and RDF Site Summary where RDF in turn stands for Resource Data Framework. In any case it is a method of summarizing the latest news and information from a website in a lightweight form that can be easily read by any of a number of news readers or news aggregators. The idea is to give users the ability to quickly obtain the latest news and updates from a site in a headline or news digest format. This in turn helps during high-traffic periods by reducing the load on the servers.
It took me over two months to learn the RSS feed program, install them correctly and now I have over 100 installed on my web site, allowing my web site to be updated automatically every 10 minutes as a new RSS feed comes in. I don't even have to be on my site.
That's weather technical data. -- We fold for cures. The Heart Beat Of The Planet Is Here. Earth Log II »earthlogii.blogspot.com/ |
