MPLAYER; Finally!!! SUSE 9.3

I know I was finding it difficult to get MPLAYER installed. The hardest part was getting the w32 codec and stuff to go along with it. I FINALLY found a quick and SHORT description, Albeit on another Forum, on how to install MPLAYER.

I followed the directions to a "T" and it went flawless. The only thing I added was the OTHER MPLAYER plugin file for Mozilla and Netscape. This allowed me to be able to do Streaming Windows Media Files on the internet.

Here's the instructions, EXACTLY as written in the forum I saw it in. I did it exactly this way and it was flawless. Maybe this will be of help to someone. Later... Mike...

Do an online update from Yast and install the Multimedia Packs...

Next open up Yast and in the software section open 'Change Source of Installation'.
Add the Packman Yast source;
Protocol - HTTP
Server Name - packman.iu-bremen.de
Directory on Server - suse/9.3

once that's added click on the up button so packman is at the top.
...then OK & Finish

Now in Yast open 'Install & Remove Software' and use the package manager to UNINSTALL mplayer, kaffeine, xine-ui and libxine1.

Then REINSTALL those packages from the packman source (Yast will prompt you to accept the W32codecs to go with Mplayer).
This will get everything working with all the codecs you'll need.

Yea it does. Fortunately, SuSe and YAST is what made it so easy. I really like Mandrive LE 2005, but their automatic updates aren't as easy.

Getting Flash and Java to work are/were a pain. Never did get MPLAYER to work. I tried the same with SuSe 9.3, but I couldn't get MPLAYER installed manually no matter what I tried. Doing it with YAST and Packman with the instructions above was the ONLY way I could get it installed. Luckily SuSe cam already installed with Java and Flash.

Hopefully, legal issues and agreements can be worked out so that future releases of Distros will be more user friendly without MANUAL intervention required. If that happens, I am positive that Linux could give Microsoft XP a run for their money. Later... Mike...

I just followed a procedure that was essentially the same. I am now able to watch DVD rental movies, yay!

The trick is that you have to remove them before going to the packman site to download.

Even so, I think that I am going to make the change in my YaST as you have done, for the future.

Nice post for those of us who had troubles viewing certain video formats. Will this allow someone running linux to view this, for example,:
»Water Launch??? Can this be real?, not the post but the video.
Not that I care, but I feel if you're going to run linux, you should be able to see web content of any sort.

The example you posted is viewable in My SuSE 9.2 with the proper codecs installed. All in all I'd say 90% of web content is viewable under Linux. I have about 50% success with Quicktime files mainly because Apple keeps changing their bloody codecs. And of course anything that requires an Internet Exploder ActiveX Control is simply NOT going to work in Linux no way no how.

All in all I don't view the unplayable media files as a Linux failing but rather the fault of web designers with poor judgment when it comes to posting content. These idiots bought the whole M$ package and don't care at all when M$ violates accepted standards...
