Got some acronis stuffs via online download but most comes on a retail boxed version.

when you make your purchase, they verify the credit card, and send you an email to the addy you specify when you order within 30 mins.
in the email you get a download link and a serial number, plus proof of purchase if you ever need it.

I got mine that way...had no issues. NewEgg had the best price for it from all the sites that I checked too.
just make sure that you burn your downloaded version and serial number to a cd...just in case you lose your hard drive.
edit to add the following:
