What Cable Modem does Insight Use?

Greetings,

I am new to the Louisville, KY area am interested in getting the Cable BB service through Insight.

My first question is, what cable modem does Insight Use? Apparently it is $39.99 to purchase and I was going to see if I could find the same hardware for cheaper. If not, I'll simply get it from them.

I'm also hearing that their service is $39.99 (if I only get the BB) for one year and then $44.99 after that. Also, apparently there is no one-year committment so I can cancel anytime.

Overall, how is Insight's BB service in Louisville (or just in general). Is it a good investment or is there a better route to take in my area for fast, dependable, and affordable broadband?

Thanks!

Do they do anything special/difficult to their Motorola Surfboard 5120s setting wise? Or should I be fine purchasing the same cable modem elsewhere (if I can find it for cheaper)?

Nothing special at all...you'll be fine purchasing the same modem elsewhere.

Its cheaper to get insights and if anything happens to it they replace it for free, unlike best buy or radio shack

From what I've seen so far I think you're right Klownin, I guess I'll just go with theirs. One question though, do they charge you some rediculous 20 or 30 dollar fee for S/H of the thing? Or does a tech bring it to you when he comes to "unlock" the service?

In the past, the tech brought it when hooking up the service...I assume it's still the same.

They bring the modem when they come out to hook up the service.

For me it's cheaper to buy a modem and not be charged the extra $10 a month. I bought a motorola surfboard modem off newegg.com for $60 and it paid for itself in 6 months.

Insight actually sells the modems , I think last time I checked they are $39.00 or $49.00. Also if you buy it from Insight and something goes wrong 1-2+ years later , they will replace it for free.

I'm curious though if Insight does go with faster speeds wouldn't that mean you would need a Dosics 2 compatiable modem and would Insight upgrade or swap out for free ?

I have a old sharkfin and it's pretty darn old and I'm wanting to upgrade to a new modem because this one I have is not docisis 2.0 copmplatiable.

You dont have to rent the modem, you can just buy it from them for 39.99 and they will charge you on your next bill....

You can call tech support and tell them you are seeing some intermittent speed problems and they will come out and swap that shark fin for a better modem.......atleast that's what i do. If i go to a service call and you have a shark fin, Com21, or a RCA (that has a Serial number that starts with 31bp or 32bp) I swap them no questions asked as i see nothing but problems with them

When I signed up with Insight a few years ago they were selling the Arris Touchstone CM450. I've had no problems with it. »www.arrisi.com/consumer_products···ndex.asp

I am currently using my old notebook (AMD K6 333) and the speed would be better with dial up. Turning off Zone Alarm, deleting temp files, and a defrag has not helped the speed. The speed problem started in the last six weeks.

With recent local maintenance and upgrades, could my shark fin be the problem?

This link answers that question. »Insight BB Forum FAQ »Which cable modems does InsightBB support?

upported Cable Modems

Insight Broadband is DOCSIS certified, which means that any DOCSIS Cable Labs approved cable broadband modem should work with our high-speed Internet service. Cable modems are provided by third party vendors, and while all DOCSIS certified modems should work with our service, we cannot guarantee that all features will be supported and/or that future updates will not be required.

The following modems have been tested and certified to work with the Insight Broadband service:

3 COM 2940, 3CR29220, 3CR29223
Arris CM300A
COM21 CP3001, Doxport 1110, Doxport 1110 XB
Motorola SB2100, SB3100, SB4100, SB4200, SB5100
RCA DCM 105, DCM 205, DCM 225, DCM 235, DCM 305, DCM315, DCM315R
Toshiba PCX1100

Cable modems that are designed to work partially with the telephone system (known as "telco return" modems) will NOT work on the Insight Broadband network.

If you are interested in using a cable modem that is not included in the list above, please contact your local Insight Broadband Customer Care office for more information.
