| It's time. Take no names! It is update time once again. The "preliminary" doctor visits are over. I spent several hours with the doctors at the Moffitt Cancer Center yesterday. Plain and simple, there recommendation is for no surgery, only radiation and chemo therapy.
The countdown to being cancer free is about to begin. Although the exact schedule has yet to be set, this is how I envision it will go.
Hopefully I will see the oral surgeon this Friday and have the three necessary extractions done. Doing so will give me the weekend to recover a bit and I will be able to be in my office come Monday morning. There will be a two week "healing" window before radiation and chemo treatments can begin. That would be until around the 12th of August.
Most likely during the second week of healing I will go and have the "mask" that I will wear during the radiation made. Once it is made there will be an alignment session with the radiation machine. During that session the mask and I will be "marked/tattooed" so that my head and neck will be in the exact same position each time the radiation is done, which I believe will take an hour to an hour and a half. As I understand it, once this is done, each visit for radiation will take about 10 to 15 minutes, with only about 2 minutes of radiation. The rest of the time will be taken is positioning me.
I do not yet know what the actual treatment schedule will be. The radiation will be at least once a day and possibly twice a day, Monday through Friday, with weekends off to "recuperate." As for the chemo therapy, the schedule for that has not yet been determined either. It may be 3 small doses or one massive dose a week.
Presently, other than some "mostly" controllable pain I am fine. In truth, I have cancer, which means that I am sick, but I don't feel sick. That is most definitely going to change. To get well, I must get sicker, a lot sicker. If the time line I have mentioned above holds true, to put it bluntly sometime around the first to second week of September it will begin to really suck to be me. From there it will get worse before it gets better.
The radiation and chemo therapy will last for 7 to 8 weeks. That will take me to about mid October. Six weeks after the treatments are finished I will make another journey over to Moffitt for post-treatment followup and evaluation. That should be right close to the end of November or first of December.
That my friends is when I will hear that I am cancer free. CURED
Those who know me know that I am stubborn, anyone who is a Taurus is. My intention is to be in my office every single day that I can, if only for a few hours. That is going to cause some problems in that I must be very careful about contracting any illnesses, but I will prepare for that. I will also continue posting and letting all of you know how things are going. When things are good I will say so and when bad I'll let you know that too.
My journey is not going to be pleasant. It will however be ever so much easier knowing that I have all of you pulling for me. I know I am not going to go through this alone. I have thank you before and will again in the future for your support, thoughts and Mojo. That will get me through to the end of the tunnel.
It is time to enter the battle and kick some ass. I'm ready! | |
