My ISP uses Postini in combination with McAfee. I haven't seen a virus infected email in my ISP email account in ages. In fact, the protection offered by Postini is so good, it's hard to be adventurous and test Norton's ability to catch the EICAR Test Virus in an email. When I signed up for broadband in 2002, Postini was offered for free for a 90 day period. I never cancelled the service at the end of the trial period and for about five cents a day ($1.50 per month), I great protection. |

Time Warner/Road Runner in Central Ohio uses Symantec. So far, only one virus infected email in over two years through them.
My customers with SBC/YAHOO receive virus/worm infected emails fairly regularly thorugh the SBC POP servers. Symantec SAV CE in the locations has caught all so far. -- Every Good Electrical Engineer Zeroes Each Register |

| reply to Mowergun My ISP, MTS.NET scans email for viruses and spam.
But I use a separate email service SPAMCOP.NET which provides more and more customizable spam filters.
Keep in mind that, so far as I know, ISPs that scan for viruses are only scanning email for viruses.
So you can still get viruses from web pages, downloads, P2P file sharing, vulnerable ports, and so on, unless you have up-to-date anti-virus and anti-spyware/anti-adware protection on your own machine. -- (Virus&Hijacking FAQ + Submit suspected malware + Backups FAQ + Security FAQ TOC) |

| reply to Mowergun My ISP, Frontiernet, does not scan for viruses at the server level. Since everyone else seems to have an ISP that does, I thought I'd mention one that doesn't.
You might ask why I choose to use an ISP that doesn't scan for viruses. Well, they are the only broadband provider available in my area so I am stuck with them, but that's OK because I scan for viruses locally. -- »musicfromthebluelight.com/ |

| reply to Mowergun I am currently with Consolidated.net, the ISP of my phone company, my wife works for the phone company so we have unlimited dial up for $9.99 per month. My former ISP, One-Eleven.net, uses Postini along with a virus scanner. One-Eleven is also pretty aggressive about trying to stop the spread of virii in other ways. They block port 139? I think it is to prevent the spread of Sasser? type worms. They also temporarily suspend the service of infected customers and notify them by phone that their computers are sending out infected emails or scanning the way an infected computer might do. They then offer technical support to help the customer get clean and restore their internet service. One-Eleven gave outstanding service, but we switched as an economy move. |

| reply to Mowergun Road Runner scans at the national inbound and outbound mail GATEWAY servers not on the local level. If you send email to another RR user, be they in your franchise, or another RR franchise, the mail is NOT scanned either coming or going. It is only mail coming from outside the RR network or leaving the RR network for an outside destination that is scanned. The scanner is Symantec Corporate. I know a bit about how the scanning works for RR because two years ago the scanner kept letting Klez.e through (even when updated) and I spent considerable time with the person at National RR in Virginia who was in charge of the AV scanning program helping with this problem. -- Around 2005 a sudden spark will catalyze a Crisis mood. | reply to ISDNISP I have Comporium Internet service here and they use Postini (McAfee-based).
Excellent (free) service, on my end, anyway.
Haven't had a single virus get through on my email since I got it (which doesn't leave my A/V a whole lot to do). Sends you a message like this when something gets blocked:
"Dear spy1@comporium.net,
Comporium Communications's Mail Filter service has detected a potential e-mail virus. This suspicious message has been quarantined in your Message Center:
From: administrator@comporium.net Subject: YOUR NEW ACCOUNT PASSWORD IS APPROVED Virus: Generic Malware.a!zip
To read, deliver, or delete the message without infecting your computer, go to:
messagecenter.internettoolkit.net/(Blanked out by me)
Thank You!
Comporium Communications"
I consider it outstanding for what it does. Pete |

| reply to Mowergun I have Speakeasy and I can't tell you how they do their filtering both for viruses and spam, but it has been very effective for both. If I have gotten a virus, I never see it. When the filtering first started, one would be notified that a virus had been stripped, and my only assumption is that I have either not gotten any or they have stopped notifying as I've had no notices of such in months and months. I do still get an occasional spam but very seldom does that reach my inbox either...maybe one or 2 at the most in months. -- JKK Age is a very high price to pay for my maturity. said by MrBradTX :said by Inernetjunky :I have Comcast, and I believe they use Brightmail by NAV. I think that's the name. Isn't Brightmail an anti-Spam product, and not an AV? I have had virus-infected emails get to my Comcast Inbox (which my dersktop AV then made short work of). I remember trying to send myself a test virus attachment and I got a notice saying that Brightmail stop it. This was last year some time. I haven't tried doing that lately. Maybe things have changed. |

Too late to edit my post. I want to add that another RR member and I did some tests and RR now is scanning within the network also. That is good. I was going on tests I did some time ago and RR has since then added scanning within the network.
DSLR is not an ISP, but what is going on with mail scanning here? Used to you would get a notice and the mail would be stripped of the infected attachment and sent the recipient. But today I sent this RR member eicar from my dslr account and the member never received it. So, is dslr just destroying infected mail outbound and not letting the sender know? -- Around 2005 a sudden spark will catalyze a Crisis mood.
