| reply to richter35 Looks like I've got the lone vote for Kaspersky. Last fall I had to do a rather exhaustive comparison of many software-based firewalls for work. I found Kaspersky's method of implementing rules to be the most "elegant" of all that I tested. It's similar to Outpost, but I chose Kas for compatibility issues (it just seems to "play better" with my equipment). I also appreciate its light footprint, along with the reputation for excellence Kas has in the security field.
Another excellent firewall I trialed, which did not make this poll, is Visnetic. And if I had to go outside these choices, I'd probably go with the classic Kerio 2.15, mentioned by other respondents here. BTW, nice job richter35 ! -- "The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us" - Bill Watterson |

| reply to richter35 Well..lol I have a few.
Trend Micro Internet Security has one....then there's the WinXP deal, and then there's ZA.
Speed is fine and I don't seem to have much in the way of conflicts, despite what ZA & Trend want to say.
Oh and then there's the firewall on my router.

| reply to richter35 I chose Kaspersky Anti-Hacker 'cause that's the one I'm using on 3 systems out of 5 now (2 home, 1 at work out of 4 home systems and the one at work).
It works much like ZoneAlarm with perhaps a touch of complexity added. But it seems to work well. And as part of the integrated Kaspersky Security Suite I have an anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware solution all rolled into one package.
I was a ZoneAlarm user for a long time - had to back off at version 5.1 when for some reason it began drastically cutting back my download speeds. Still unresolved.
On 2 systems I'm 'testing' the Cox HSI security package provided by Authentium. That includes firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware and parental controls. Seems to work well enough, but at a slight expense of download speed.
In the meantime out in front of it all at home is a Netgear FVS-318 Prosafe firewalling router that seems to stop all unwanted inbound traffic. -- then think again! |

| reply to richter35 Used to use the free version of Sygate, now I use F-Secure because it's a freebie from my ISP that also includes anti-virus and spam protection, among other features.

| reply to richter35 Using ZAP 5.5.094.000. I've been a big fan of ZAP since trying the free version for a couple weeks about 3 years ago. Ease of use and nice features in addition to top notch security, but for the most part it's just considered backup to my hardware firewall and for outbound security, seeing as how I'm too lazy and not really sure how to properly configure the outbound protection for the hardware firewall. My license expires in 91 days so it's about time to decide if I should stick with ZAP or no. -- Dont tease the monkeys at the zoo or they might throw dung. |
