| reply to richter35 Re: [POLL] Which Software Firewall Do You Use?
I myself have been switching between different firewalls for years now. In early days when I first found out about firewalls I used Conseal. I loved it, but it was bought out by McAfee (Signal9 the company behind it). Thats when I decided to find a new solution. While browsing GRC.com, I found out about ZoneAlarm. Steve was writing praises to it and I decided to give it a go. That was when Zone Labs was just making its way to the net. I loved v1 and 2. After v2 Ive tried probably any firewall out there. After being spoiled by application firewall and with Conseal being outdated I always returned to ZA. I dont think I will be using v6 anytime soon. The last one I would consider using is 4.5, and maybe 5.5. No luck with 5 never worked. Downloaded v6 a couple of weeks ago and it went off just minutes after installing. Antispyware would not update, and Ive tried a few betas before as well with same results, it breaks network
Ive been pretty happy with Outpost 2.1 (2.0 was too problematic on my old system). 2.5 worked fine as well, 2.6 didnt, and now Im using 2.7 and Im happy so far. It has its quirks, and some issues. Like on my current ISP I cannot browse if I dont disable Ad Filtering, Active Content and DNS plugins.
I like Sygate and I would use it if I didnt use Ad Muncher. I find it pain to find good firewall, besides ZA, that works with it properly. Sygate is what I want, plain firewall, unlike do it all ZA is trying to become in latest releases. I wish ZA would fix loopback issue. Until then it wont touch my system.
I see a lot of people (in replies) using Kerio 2. I also like it because of its small footprint and being straightforward. I just wish it got updated. If I were to use rules based firewall it would probably be 8signs. However, the time of writing complex rules and spending days configuring a firewall is behind me. I like being asked what to do. Simpler and faster.
Thanks for kind words. I appreciate it. Thanks for replying and providing us with details. |

| reply to richter35 While my network is protected by my handy router, I do keep in favor of the Sygate firewall (free edition). And then second in line, it'd be Kerio.
I say, the less system resources it uses, and it can prove it's effectiveness with the fight against cyber threads... then, use it! -- The purpose of war is to serve a political end, but the true nature of war is to serve itself. -X.O. Hunter from Crimson Tide |

| reply to richter35 I'm currently in the process of converting to IPCop. It's a nice Linux-based solution that is very configurable...and you don't even have to know anything about Linux to get it up and running.
Smoothwall also deserves a mention in this firewall category. The core IPCop team actually came from the Smoothwall development folks. -- Discover a cure! |

| reply to richter35 ZAP on two computers with my Linksys router and Sygate on my notebook.
I'm probably going to switch to Sygate Free on all my computers because ZAP is getting a little too bloated for me. Sygate is small enough and does the job with little fuss. -- Please use all available doors...you have 33 to choose from. |

| reply to richter35 I have used the free version of Zone alarm for several years. It blocks any outgoing connections you dont enable. It also protects me when I bypass my router. I also block incoming and most outgoing ports with my Zywall 5, but the Zone Alarm log tells you what program is trying to get out. The Zywall cant identify the program. -- Jim Anderson |

| Zone Alarm Pro 6.0.631.003 on both computers and Im behind the Linksys WRT54GS router.
After a download, this has to be the worst version of Zone Alarm ever with its default settings. The new triple protection firewall/OS firewall is a joke, Id be right in the middle of doing something, ZA would detect a service or command, usually one from it self of a Microsoft product and choke up. Between that and Smart Advisor and the fact it took me over two hours to be able to get my two computers to share files with each other again. Still dont know what I did or how I did it, but I fear the next time I update or reformat a drive.
I dont claim to be an expert on Zone Alarm, but I have used it off and on for about 5 years now and have been using it steady for the past two and have a good idea how to tweak it and set it up. I had Trusted Zone protection completely disabled and I still wasnt able to access my workgroup, then finally after I was able to get it, I had issues with ZAP an my Wireless Print Server but after a reboot it was okay. Everythings working fine now, but 2 days ago I was about to ditch ZAP and rely solely on my router. |

| Geez, I was a beta tester for Hacktracer firewall for Win 2000 back in 1999 or 2000 I guess. It was made by Sharp Technology and was long ago sold to McCafee. I got a free copy for my time and trouble and still use it.
Maybe I should look to get a newer one. I went to »www.sharptechnology.com/news7.htm and the anouncement is still on their web site!!! |
