| setting up network domain
hi,
ok what i want to do is instead of using a work group i want to use a domain.
I want to be able to make the accounts on my main machine and then be able to log into any other machine using that account.
getting the domain is not a problem (I'll just set it up via windows hosts file) but where should i point it to? its currently pointing to 127.0.0.1...
this might be right but before i start to play around i just want to make sure.
cheers, Phil |

| reply to copy Another way to go is SAMBA on LINUX if you don't want to invest money into Windows server. SAMBA can act as PDC (primary domain controller) and it's free.
I'm currently using samba PDC for the same reasons as you've described ...centralized accounts and profiles for my small home network. |

1 edit | reply to copy Yes, you downloaded the tools, which will install on an XP box. That is so you can manage a windows server/domain from a windows XP machine. But, without windows server, you will not be able to create a domain.
EDIT: not counting the SAMBA and LINUX models as described above. |

If you wanted AD, you need to go with server 2000 or 2003. If you just want the domain go with SAMBA and LINUX.
E-Bay is good for finding cheap Server 2000 and 2003. Just be careful with a 2003 license, you may need to call MS to get it reactivated. -- "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke |

| Your right...in the windows world Domain really equals = windows server NT4 Active Directory Domain = windows server 2000 or 2003
I was trying to point out to the OP that just downloading the free toolset to administer an AD domain doesn't equal having a domain |
