| Linksys Router Daisy Chained to a Netgear RT314
I came across a setup today consisting of a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless Router daisy chained to a Netgear RT314. The Wireless Router has DHCP disabled and is getting it's IP from the Netgear. They are using the Wireless connection for a Laptop. All is working okay. I did notice that the laptop card setup has WEP disabled and I would guess the same is set in the Wireless Router. I was wondering about the security of this setup.

Also the Wifi Router should preferably be outside the dynamic pool of the RT314 (ie set its LANIP manually), but of course still within the subnet of the RT314. (DHCP and RIP turned off as well). In terms of security you should be using WPA with a minimum random 25 character key. WEP does not cut the mustard anymore.

He needs to upgrade his wireless notebook card or driver. I believe it was a Linksys WPC11 which only had WEP as an option with his current driver (his router supports WPA). I managed to locate a WPA driver for this adapter but haven't been back to his place to install it yet. Right now all he has is the WEP encryption and MAC filtering.

Dartmouth, NS | Better than no protection with the plan to implement WPA when able is good. Ensure the router password is also not the default (min 8 random characters - u/l case, numbers symbols). |
