| Hmmm, well I do recall looking at the status, and the ip address was 192.168.48 or something like that, it wasn't your typical 65-68.x.x.x, its set on "Automatic - DHCP" (I don't know if it should be set on pppoe, but internet for all the computers work). This camera is at a friends house that i'm setting up, so i'm not familiar with DSL. | |

| Sounds like you are double nat'ing where you have both the linky and the westel doing DHCP with the westell assigning the wan side ip of the linky and then the linky assigning the ip's of the machines.

Wayne I would agree as most people do not understand what they have and what they are actually doing by adding a Linksys ( or another type router ) behind a Westell, The on top of all that people go and buy Norton Int Sec or some other software firewall and wonder why they have surfing/speed issues.
I have a XP system setup with an internal quadraplex 8 port PCI card used to view 4 day/night cameras which all of it I bought off Ebay for hardly nothing. I have a 2wire with my XP ICF disabled. I can view my cams inside my network just fine and as long as I have my correct port forwarded to the correct DHCP IP on my sustem and the viewing software set up with the same port I can then view my cams from anywhere. I used to have a SIP but no longer do as I downgraded my service for money saving reasons but have a domain registered through NO-IP that I use now with no probs. It really isnt that hard getting everything to work but you really need to know what all you have and how you need to set eveything up. I know that is why that person is here but we really will need a complete listing of all equipment or maybe the best thing to do is have that person call thier ISP with a conference call to the camera system techs. | |

| That ain't gonna work as that will show the lan ip not the wan ip. The poster needs to go into the DSL router in this case a Westell to pull the wan ip.

you need to know the bellsouth user id and password. it will be something like hairyhunkofluv@bellsouth.net. you will also need to know the password. if you don't know both you will have problems. say so in advance. anyway. surf to your linksys and change the internet connection type from dhcp to pppoe. enter your bellsouth user id and password. include the @bellsouth.net. nothing else is required. save the settings. in the back of the westell, push and hold the reset button for 5 seconds. turn the westell off then on. when the dsl or ready light is solid green, turn the linksys off then on. reboot the computer. post if you can connect again. if you cannot, buy your friend a snack and go to the bar. | |

| I have had three going all at the same time using three different computers. I can monitor different areas around my house from work. I am using the free Windows Media Encoder which so far has been the only thing I could to work right.
My suggestions:
1) setup up a dynamic dns through dyndns.org. Now if you have a static IP then you can make it a static and in both cases you only have to remember a name, not a number.
2) find out what port the webcam software is using. You will need to forward through the linksys router the port to the computer you are running the webcam on. Since I have a STH Home set as a PRO, I first have to forward the port on my modem to my router and then the router forwards it to the appropriate computer. I am not familar with the Westel at all.
3) Oh, and if you are running Windows XP with the built-in firewall, make sure you set in the firewall an exception for that port. Of course if this is already working inside your network then this is not a problem.
4) Good Luck! This takes some trial and error. | |

As for the last suggestion, I did all of those before, in fact I already had it set up on a cable connection, so I know it works, just this DSL crap got me stumped. | |

I'm familiar with linksys and how to set up pppoe, I had DSL at one point in time. I recall being in his Westell modem, and I clicked "Expert Mode" and it didn't work. I guess i'll learn more tomorrow. | |

1 edit | Check the FAQ's here for instructions on setting up a pinhole aka passthrough in the Westell. You will use that information to map an external request to a port on your wan IP to the lan port and IP of your webcam. Since you are more than likely using DHCP you will need to hardcode the IP of the webcam on the nic of the machine running the webcam to keep things simple.

I need to forward the ports in the MODEM too, if only the "Expert Mode" button worked I would not be having any problems and would have been able to trouble shoot my way from there, I don't know if his modem is screwed up or what, but i'm heading out the door right now to go see. | |

| Well, I decided to give up. Why? I can't keep doing this stuff at a friends house bugging him all the time (even though he doesn't mind). I'm going to wait for my DSL package to come and experiment with it once I get it. I did some last minute stuff to see if I could get it to work, it didn't. One thing I didn't do is set up pppoe on his router, reason, I don't know is password (and don't want too, don't have time to ask). I think I got it all down, I should be able to get it to work fine once I get DSL. I believe i'll probably be getting the 2 wire modem.....
