| [Help Me] Is my DI-524 + DWL-G630 WLAN speed typical or not?
New user here...both new to WiFi and Comcasr...I ran some speed tests via this site from same state...using wifi on an older W98SE laptop...i got 2.18Mbp/s download avg...is this typical or good or bad? For someone used to dial-up Net speed, it's GREAT but just curious...I don't have any other systems on LAN so local speed is not applicable as i understand it...thanks!! |

That sounds like it is on the slow side. However, being Windows 98SE, you probably are not configured for broadband at all.
I suggest that you take the Tweak Test (see Tests and Tools) and follow that advice. -- Robb Topolski http://www.funchords.com/ Hillsboro, Oregon USA They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security |

| I did a tweak test on my wired (via 524) W2K system...bumped the RWIN from 17520 to 37960...a speed test that had been 3473 kbps became 5722 kbps...so bumping that on W98 system also would appear to help...I presume that won't affect me when I use dial-up on these systems? |

What you can do is research the registry entries and make a couple of different .REG files or -- if W98 works similar to 2K/XP in this way -- you can make the entries on an adapater/interface level. -- Robb Topolski http://www.funchords.com/ Hillsboro, Oregon USA They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security |

| My research today appears to indicate that on W98, the entries are global...but as I'm using wi-fi most of the time now, a slower dial-up on occasion won't hurt that much...I bumped my RWIN on W98 from 8192 to 29200 (it may be higher but not sure if that was active yet) and my download speed just about TRIPLED! |

| Used "speedtest.ma.charter.com" using 2MB and 3 samples: Best speed = 6.02 Mbps, Average speed = 5.81 Mbps Worst speed = 5.39 Mbps, Average time taken = 2.91 secs
(I am in MA so this is local test)
This shows that an ole W98SE laptop via Dlink equip CAN get decent speed IF you tweak it the right way |

| Based on this, I posted this to the local forum I run (with a link to this site as shown): For anyone who uses high speed internet and Windows: Have you optimized your setting for RWIN? If you don't know what that is, you most likely have not! As a new user of Comcast HSI, I found that my systems were only getting about half to one-third of their possible download speeds due to default settings for this Registry entry. I changed it and my speed increased quite significantly.
There is a GREAT site that has helped me a lot with this (and wi-fi) called www.DSLreports.com that has various speed tests and tweak tools to help optimize your settings. It also has VERY informative and helpful forums on topics related to DSL/Cable/Wireless/etc.
